The Terror of Standing Before God as a False Teacher

It seems that every day I find myself contending with false teachers. Not just on this site, they are everywhere. I often find myself wondering: do they truly not understand the terrifying responsibility of claiming to represent God while misrepresenting His Word? Is Hebrews 10:31 not in their Bible?

"It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God." — Hebrews 10:31

One day, every person who has claimed to teach the Word of God will stand before Him and give an account. Your church, denomination, followers, popularity, education, YouTube channel, or reputation will mean nothing.

The only question that will matter to you as a teacher is: Did you faithfully teach His Word, or did you intentionally misrepresent it?

Scripture repeatedly warns that teaching carries enormous responsibility. Here are ten warnings every teacher should take seriously.

1. Teachers Will Receive a Stricter Judgment​

James 3:1 "Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness."

God Himself warns that teachers will be judged more strictly than others.

2. Preaching Another Gospel Brings God's Curse​

Galatians 1:8–9 "But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed... As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed."

The gospel is not ours to edit.

3. False Teachers Bring Swift Destruction Upon Themselves​

2 Peter 2:1 "There will be false teachers among you... bringing upon themselves swift destruction."

False teaching is not merely an intellectual error. It invites God's judgment.

4. Their Condemnation Is Certain​

2 Peter 2:3 "Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep."

God has not forgotten. His judgment may seem delayed, but it is certain.

5. Twisting Scripture Leads to Your Own Destruction​

2 Peter 3:16 "...the ignorant and unstable twist them to their own destruction.

Every teacher should tremble before handling God's Word carelessly.

6. Many Religious Teachers Will Be Rejected by Christ​

Matthew 7:21–23 Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name...?' ... And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.''

Doing ministry is not the same as faithfully representing Christ.

7. Causing Believers to Stumble Brings Terrible Judgment​

Matthew 18:6 "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea."

Leading believers into error is treated with terrifying seriousness.

8. False Teachers Are Destined for Utter Darkness​

2 Peter 2:17 "These are waterless springs... For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved."

God has already declared the end of those who persist in false teaching.

9. The False Prophet Will Be Cast Alive into the Lake of Fire​

Revelation 19:20 "These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur."

God's final judgment upon those who deliberately deceive is eternal.

10. God's Coming Wrath Should Make Every False Teacher Tremble​

One of the judgments during the Tribulation includes hailstones weighing about one talent—approximately 45 kg (100 pounds).

Revelation 16:21 "And great hailstones, about one talent each, came down from heaven upon people..."

Think on that. Whilst you are teaching and leading many astray God will be dropping numerous 45 kg stones on your head. Definitely something to think about the next time you decide to be a false teacher, don't you think?

Every teacher should ask themselves:

"Am I absolutely certain that what I am teaching comes from Scripture, or am I forcing Scripture to fit what I already believe?"

Final Thought​

The Bible never warns teachers to not be popular. It never warns teachers to not have bigger churches. It never warns teachers to not gain more followers.

It repeatedly warns teachers to handle God's Word accurately and reminds them that they will one day answer to the Author of that Word.

If James says teachers receive a stricter judgment...If Paul says those who preach another gospel are accursed...If Peter says those who twist Scripture do so to their own destruction...

...then perhaps we should spend less time defending our traditions and more time making sure our doctrine truly comes from the Bible.

Because one day, every teacher will stand alone before God.

I know someone who is an adulterer, attends church, and teaches children. It angered me greatly because there is little to nothing I can do about it.

My good Christian friend at work put my mind at ease by sharing what God showed him in Scripture, namely Revelation 16:21, which is point 10 in the OP. The image of 45 kg / 100 pound hailstones falling upon the wicked during God's judgment in the tribulation is a sobering reminder that God sees all things and that His justice will come.

If anyone is becoming frustrated by what appears to be delayed justice from God, remember, 45 kg / 100 pound hailstones are en route......

The next time you are about to type something that you know misrepresents scripture / God / Jesus, I want you to go to the gym and pick up a 45 kg weight, and then imagine it falling on your head.
