Jesus always used stories and illustrations like these when speaking to the crowds. In fact, he never spoke to them without using such parables. This fulfilled what God had spoken through the prophet: "I will speak to you in parables. I will explain things hidden since the creation of the world." Matthew 13:34-35 NLT
The stories Jesus shared were some of the most important we’ve ever heard. As we read them, we are invited to identify with the main characters and ask ourselves what impact the choices made had on the outcome of the story. The stories Jesus told weren’t just interesting, they were designed to make us think. There was always a purpose behind the stories.
The passage above found Jesus taking a day to simply tell stories, but there was nothing simple about these stories for the disciples. They were with Jesus every day, and even they struggled to understand what they were supposed to learn from the story.
There was benefit in the stories because once the disciples knew what they meant, they didn’t forget. The stories connected with them when facts were forgettable.
Jesus’ stories are worth considering. They can give you insight into God, other people, and the way God wants you to respond to what you learn.
Prayer: God, with Your help I can learn from Your Son’s stories. I want to pay attention to what He said so I can know how to respond with an informed heart.
