On the first day of the week, we gathered with the local believers to share in the Lord's Supper. Paul was preaching to them, and since he was leaving the next day, he kept talking until midnight. Acts 20:7 NLT

If you ever thought that a sermon dragged on a little long, then consider this story from Acts. Paul started preaching when the sun was shining, but he had a lot to say and he would be leaving in the morning. His sermon went until midnight. That wasn’t the end of the sermon, but something happened that caused an unexpected intermission. A man sitting on the windowsill fell asleep, fell backward, and died. No one expected that.

Paul went downstairs to check on the young man. Eutychus. He was miraculously brought back to life. They both went back upstairs and had communion, and then Paul continued preaching until dawn.

Maybe you’ve read this story before, but if there is a takeaway for you today, it’s that there are things worth pursuing in the Bible, even if it takes time. God can bring dead things to life, and the people who heard Paul preach stayed to learn.

Take the time, embrace new life, linger, and learn.

Prayer: Lord, there are times when I want to read Your Word. I start and my mind wanders. But when I stick with it, You teach me just what I need to know.
