The Seduction of Bibliolatry

The purpose of God for the creation was revealed to man kind by the written Word of God. Jesus is a part of that purpose. The Word that God spoke through prophets and Jesus is the way which truly gives eternal life to those who accept the Father's offer.

Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Joh 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Col 1:12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:

Col 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

Col 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Eph 5:20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

So Heb 4:12 remainds about that written Word which pierces and causes discernment to believe, trust and respond to the offer of the Father.

Do you think that Abraham understood God's pupose for creation?

Abraham trusted God in everything God told him. This is the faith we should have but we seem to have turn our heads away from what God tells us to listen to man's story.

Try answering the question.

Do you think that Abraham understood God's pupose for creation

This is what we know about Abraham from God

Heb 11:8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
Heb 11:9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
Heb 11:10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
Heb 11:11 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.
Heb 11:12 Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.
Heb 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
Heb 11:14 For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.
Heb 11:15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.
Heb 11:16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
Heb 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,
Heb 11:18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:
Heb 11:19 Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.

survey says. . . wrong answer.

Jhn 8:56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw [it], and was glad.

Wait a minute, Abraham saw God's plan of redemption and yet he never read any scripture

Could you, please, explain what does exactly "to be born again" mean to you? I am not trying to be funny, just want to be on the same page with you.

God bless
I am sorry for taking so long to answer that.I am sure there are many more scholarly than I that can present a better explanation but please allow me to present my view:

Gen 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

God is tripartite- Father, Son and Holy Spirit.God made man in His own image - tripartite - spirit, soul and body.

Gen 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

The day Adam ate the forbidden fruit his body did not die nor did his soul. Adam experienced a spiritual death which separated him from God.

God would make a way for His fellowship with man to be restored and this way was prophesied by Ezekiel :

Eze 11:19 And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh:
Eze 11:20 That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.

Eze 36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
Eze 36:27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

There had to be a cleansing of sin and a spiritual rebirth for man and God to once again meet and take those long walks in the garden.
Jesus Himself tells us that we cannot see, perceive or have any part in the Kingdom of God without this spiritual rebirth:

Joh 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Joh 3:4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
Joh 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
Joh 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Unless a man be born of water (the natural birthing process of the body (breaking of the water bag) and the Spirit (the impartation of new spiritual life) He cannot enter into God's Kingdom. What is born of the flesh [(body), mans efforts] cannot please God nor stand in His presence.

We are given a new spiritual man or inner man made (anew) in God's image:
Eph 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

1Jn 5:18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

2Co 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

This salvation experience or "born again" experience places new life in the believers by spiritual regeneration.
The soul (mind, will, intellect, emotions) must come in agreement with the spiritual revelation given by the Holy Spirit in the Word of God. As this soul is made new (in it's very life force) and every way of thinking it is become renewed and thinks, acts and believes the Word of God in every circumstance- this is the saving of the soul.

Eph 4:23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

Rom 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Tit 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
Tit 3:6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;

As the spirit receives revelation, the mind is renewed and the body follows the thoughts of the renewed mind- this is a man who walks pleasing to God in every area of his life. He is now complete and mature following God's plan and purpose for his life and the power of the Living God flows freely in and through him.

Joh 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
Joh 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

The Seduction of Bibliolatry

[Bibliolatry in practice is the worship of intellect by its adherence by human reason to an understanding of the Bible. It replaces the leading of the abiding Holy Spirit within, which Jesus promised all who believe, with the domineering power of the human mind.]

the title catch my attention so i read the post... the quoted above lines struck me because every time a decision comes my way i would run to the Bible for confirmations...

just lately, a new direction has come and would like the Lord to talk to me through His Words for confirmation, but since the day i and my pastor talked about it until now, no revelations came yet though i already decided to go on that way... only His peace leading me as were being prayed for...

so strange... because never the Lord would speak to me through dreams and circumstances but through the Scriptures most of the time ; but since that day, i got dreams associated with it but still would long for God to speak to me in His Words.. hehe...

Is that BIBLIOLATRY???:embarasse .. Am i already being seduced in my own intellect/understanding??? aww lol (Lord rescue me...) i wish not to miss the leading of the Holy Spirit in my life...

i shared that thought to one of my mentors in the church and she said it's an insult to a man of God if after the Lord has spoken through him, still i would ask for further confirmations... uhmm..
:coocoo:.. wish not to insult my pastor...

but anyway thanks for posting this Jiggy..... i think this is a wake up call on my part.. hehe

the Lord bless you more... Amen

I have concluded men might better hear God if we were`nt so persuaded that having our noses stuck perpetually in His book, seeking to hone our theological skills, is what causes us to grow up in Christ.

(Pro 30:5) Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

Man calls it theological skills, God calls His Word pure and Jesus calls it our bread of life:

(Luk 4:4) And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

(Joh 6:48) I am that bread of life.
(Joh 6:49) Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.
(Joh 6:50) This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.

What is Jesus telling us in above verses. (See Luke 4:4 for answer)

(Joh 6:51) I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
(Joh 6:52) The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
(Joh 6:53) Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
(Joh 6:54) Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
(Joh 6:55) For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.

We can experience and know God through others, or we can experience God through His son first hand and be a partaker.

Reading things of others, can be of great help to us, but should only be there as a guideline.

Experiencing knowing God first hand through His son, will be far beneficial to us all.

Being rooted in the Vine is the only thing that produces growth. Now prayer as a conversation in a relationship is a wonderful thing for growth, as is opening the Scripture, and having the One you are in relationship with, show you the intent of His heart...but without relationship what have you got but empty ritual and a head full of knowledge?

Yes, what you have shared above is very important, but so is knowledge. We all need it, and it's available.

(Hos 4:6) My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

We are not going to know or understand:-

  • God's plan for mankind
    His plan for Israel
    His kindness
    His Love
    His wrath
    His grace

And, much more, if we don't gain knowledge through reading His Word.

Do the followers of Christ not pause to realize that for hundreds of years His followers had no Script to go by -that even Christs chosen disciples had no Script in hand other than the Old Testament Scripture, so in essence they HAD to be led of the Spirit in this strange new world of the New Covenant, or they would`nt have got very far without being lost and confused as to what their mission was.

Act 17:11
(11) These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

2Ki 22:8 The chief priest Hilkiah told the scribe Shaphan, "I have found the Book of Moses' Teachings in the LORD'S temple." Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, who then read it.
2Ki 22:9 The scribe Shaphan went to the king and reported, "We have taken the money donated in the temple and have given it to the workmen who are in charge of the LORD'S temple."
2Ki 22:10 Then the scribe Shaphan told the king, "The priest Hilkiah has given me a book." And Shaphan read it to the king.
2Ki 22:11 When the king heard what the book of the Teachings said, he tore his clothes in distress.
2Ki 22:12 Then the king gave an order to the priest Hilkiah, to Ahikam (son of Shaphan), Achbor (son of Micaiah), the scribe Shaphan, and the royal official Asaiah. He said,
2Ki 22:13 "On behalf of the people, all of Judah, and me, ask the LORD about the words in this book that has been found. The LORD'S fierce anger is directed towards us because our ancestors did not obey the things in this book or do everything written in it."

Dan 9:2 In the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, learned from the Scriptures the number of years that Jerusalem would remain in ruins. The LORD had told the prophet Jeremiah that Jerusalem would remain in ruins for 70 years.

Luk 24:32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

Luk 24:45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

If you have eSword, please do a few seaches on these words "tablets, scrolls and scriptures'' As it was available, but not in book form, like it is today.

This is beauty of God's written word to us, because His Word is truth and we can now go back and check.

Act 17:11
(11) These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

The script is wonderful ...but the life source is not in the book...rather the life source HAS to be within US. Dont substitute the Script for the Spirit is all i`m saying!

I can't believe what you are saying here!

How are we going to know God, if we don't read the only book, which He has ever written to us.

Jos 1:8
(8) This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

This is why, there's is so much confusion, so many regligions, so many denominations, so much divisions, so much lack of love, so much hate, so much anger and list go on!

People would rather listen to man and his interpretation of it, than to read His book, and let it become flesh in them.

This book was written by God, not man. The creator of Heaven and Earth, wrote the Bible to us.

(Eph 6:17) And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

We learn it, we digest it and we eat it and then we manifest it.

Rev 1:9 I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Rev 20:4
(4) And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

1Jo 1:3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

We can experience and know God through others, or we can experience God through His son first hand and be a partaker.

This statement is very contrary to the scriptures and to HolySpirit.

No one can know God unless they know the Son, period.

I see many things wrong with this post that need pointing out but until this one thing is understood nothing else can be comprehended.

I know that you have been here @TJ for sometime Word of Life, so please don't be offended but rather let's discuss this line of reasoning with the hopes of growing in spiritual knowledge. Some of the problem here maybe simple linguistical difficulty so lets be patient with each other and work towards clearly stating our opinions and the things we hold as truth.

IMO this isn't supported by scripture. The scriptures state that it is by Spirit that we relate and come to know Christ.

Abraham had no scripture because it didn't exist, yet Abraham knew God but it was through his experience with God.

Reading a George Bush biography however accurate it may be and knowing about him and the details of his life and character does not qualify as knowing him personally. Tis the same with the Godhead. Knowing about life and experiencing life are not the same, one can have either one without the other. The scriptures do not contain Life, they testify of it but they are not the source, Jesus is the source of life. The scriptures are a true witness of Christ but that is all that they are, a testimony. John 5:39&40

1Corinthians 2:10
But we know these things because God has revealed them to us by his Spirit, and his Spirit searches out everything and shows us even God's deep secrets.

God has chosen to communicate to us by His Spirit and the Spirit has given us a written testimony to confirm what God is communicating by His Spirit and not the other way around. When used the other way around it is reducing the whole experience to hearsay and is not the same nor will it have the same effect and or outcome.

This kind of paradigm limits the form or level of relationship and intimacy one can have with Father, Son and Holyspirit.

(Luk 24:44) And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
(Luk 24:45) Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

Why did Jesus open up the scriptures, if it was not necessary?

(Rev 1:2) Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw.

(Rev 1:9) I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.

(Rev 6:9) And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:

(Rev 20:4) And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

Why are you so afraid of the written Word. What has man done to put so much fear into so many people, to why they don't go back to the written Word to check what's been preached?

(Act 17:11) The people of Berea were more open-minded than the people of Thessalonica. They were very willing to receive God's message, and every day they carefully examined the Scriptures to see if what Paul said was true.

Paul preached to the people in Berea, he gave them God's message. But afterwards and every day, they carefully examined the scriptures, to see if what Paul preached was the truth.

They went back to the written Word, so why is it today, man is telling us, not to go back?

(2Ti 2:15) Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Please tell me why do you own a Bible?

And please tell me why God has given us His Written Word, if the Written Word was not necessay?

(Luk 24:44) And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
(Luk 24:45) Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

Why did Jesus open up the scriptures, if it was not necessary?

Jesus revealed the meaning of the scriptures to the disciples so they could understand the scriptures, not so they could relate to Him. They were misunderstanding the scriptures concerning the kingdom of God and the Messiah.

If proper faith in God is dependant on proper understanding of the scriptures then it becomes gnostic and not spiritual.

Jesus also smeared mud and spit into the blind man's eyes, was it necessary?

(Act 17:11) The people of Berea were more open-minded than the people of Thessalonica. They were very willing to receive God's message, and every day they carefully examined the Scriptures to see if what Paul said was true.

Paul preached to the people in Berea, he gave them God's message. But afterwards and every day, they carefully examined the scriptures, to see if what Paul preached was the truth.

They went back to the written Word, so why is it today, man is telling us, not to go back?

Where did they get God's message from? Like I said before the scriptures are confirmation of what HolySpirit is communicating and not the other way around.

Who here has said not to test, check, or go back to the scriptures to confirm holySpirit's leading?

(2Ti 2:15) Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Please tell me why do you own a Bible?

And please tell me why God has given us His Written Word, if the Written Word was not necessay?

Two key words here "study" and "rightly".

Did Abraham relate to God, did God communicate with Abraham? Did Abraham have a bible? If so was it a KJV bible??? If it wasn't necessary then why woulkd it be necessary now.

What about the blind in Paul's day, do you suppose they had braille bibles? Maybe they had the KJV Holy Bible on cassette.

Where did they get God's message from? Like I said before the scriptures are confirmation of what HolySpirit is communicating and not the other way around.

You are confusing me.

Is this not what I said right in the very beginning. I get preached too, by a man who was sent by God, and has God's Spirit. I then go back to the scriptures, to see, if what that man has said, is the truth?

Are you saying that's the wrong way? Please explain further.

Can God not reach people through His written Word as well.

2Pe 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Every single scripture is by His spirit? From God Himself, so who's doing the teaching?

I would like to take another example: What will happen, if a man has God's Word, (The Bible) and he lives in the middle of nowhere. But this man reads God's written Word, and prays to God to receive the Holy Spirit, and God teaches him through the written Word.

I may have misunderstood you. But you say there is a wrong way and a right way, and I want to hear it.
