The Saint Must Walk Alone

by A W Tozer

Most of the world's great souls have been lonely. Loneliness seems to be one price the saint must pay for his saintliness.

In the morning of the world (or should we say, in that strange darkness that came soon after the dawn of man's creation), that pious soul, Enoch, walked with God and was not, for God took him; and while it is not stated in so many words, a fair inference is that Enoch walked a path quite apart from his contemporaries.

Another lonely man was Noah who, of all the antediluvians, found grace in the sight of God; and every shred of evidence points to the aloneness of his life even while surrounded by his people.

Again, Abraham had Sarah and Lot, as well as many servants and herdsmen, but who can read his story and the apostolic comment upon it without sensing instantly that he was a man "whose soul was alike a star and dwelt apart"? As far as we know not one word did God ever speak to him in the company of men. Face down he communed with his God, and the innate dignity of the man forbade that he assume this posture in the presence of others. How sweet and solemn was the scene that night of the sacrifice when he saw the lamps of fire moving between the pieces of offering. There, alone with a horror of great darkness upon him, he heard the voice of God and knew that he was a man marked for divine favor.

Moses also was a man apart. While yet attached to the court of Pharaoh he took long walks alone, and during one of these walks while far removed from the crowds he saw an Egyptian and a Hebrew fighting and came to the rescue of his countryman. After the resultant break with Egypt he dwelt in almost complete seclusion in the desert. There, while he watched his sheep alone, the wonder of the burning bush appeared to him, and later on the peak of Sinai he crouched alone to gaze in fascinated awe at the Presence, partly hidden, partly disclosed, within the cloud and fire.

The prophets of pre-Christian times differed widely from each other, but one mark they bore in common was their enforced loneliness. They loved their people and gloried in the religion of the fathers, but their loyalty to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and their zeal for the welfare of the nation of Israel drove them away from the crowd and into long periods of heaviness. "I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children," cried one and unwittingly spoke for all the rest.

Most revealing of all is the sight of that One of whom Moses and all the prophets did write, treading His lonely way to the cross. His deep loneliness was unrelieved by the presence of the multitudes.

He died alone in the darkness hidden from the sight of mortal man and no one saw Him when He arose triumphant and walked out of the tomb, though many saw Him afterward and bore witness to what they saw. There are some things too sacred for any eye but God's to look upon. The curiosity, the clamor, the well-meant but blundering effort to help can only hinder the waiting soul and make unlikely if not impossible the communication of the secret message of God to the worshiping heart.

Sometimes we react by a kind of religious reflex and repeat dutifully the proper words and phrases even though they fail to express our real feelings and lack the authenticity of personal experience. Right now is such a time. A certain conventional loyalty may lead some who hear this unfamiliar truth expressed for the first time to say brightly, "Oh, I am never lonely. Christ said, `I will never leave you nor forsake you,' and `Lo, I am with you alway.' How can I be lonely when Jesus is with me?"

Now I do not want to reflect on the sincerity of any Christian soul, but this stock testimony is too neat to be real. It is obviously what the speaker thinks should be true rather than what he has proved to be true by the test of experience. This cheerful denial of loneliness proves only that the speaker has never walked with God without the support and encouragement afforded him by society. The sense of companionship which he mistakenly attributes to the presence of Christ may and probably does arise from the presence of friendly people. Always remember: you cannot carry a cross in company. Though a man were surrounded by a vast crowd, his cross is his alone and his carrying of it marks him as a man apart. Society has turned against him; otherwise he would have no cross. No one is a friend to the man with a cross. "They all forsook Him, and fled."

The pain of loneliness arises from the constitution of our nature. God made us for each other. The desire for human companionship is completely natural and right. The loneliness of the Christian results from his walk with God in an ungodly world, a walk that must often take him away from the fellowship of good Christians as well as from that of the unregenerate world. His God-given instincts cry out for companionship with others of his kind, others who can understand his longings, his aspirations, his absorption in the love of Christ; and because within his circle of friends there are so few who share inner experiences, he is forced to walk alone. The unsatisfied longings of the prophets for human understanding caused them to cry out in their complaint, and even our Lord Himself suffered in the same way.

The man who has passed on into the divine Presence in actual inner experience will not find many who understand him. A certain amount of social fellowship will of course be his as he mingles with religious persons in the regular activities of the church, but true spiritual fellowship will be hard to find. But he should not expect things to be otherwise. After all he is a stranger and a pilgrim, and the journey he takes is not on his feet but in his heart. He walks with God in the garden of his own soul - and who but God can walk there with him? He is of another spirit from the multitudes that tread the courts of the Lord's house. He has seen that of which they have only heard, and he walks among them somewhat as Zacharias walked after his return from the altar when the people whispered, "He has seen a vision."

The truly spiritual man is indeed something of an oddity. He lives not for himself but to promote the interests of Another. He seeks to persuade people to give all to his Lord and asks no portion or share for himself. He delights not to be honored but to see his Savior glorified in the eyes of men. His joy is to see his Lord promoted and himself neglected. He finds few who care to talk about that which is the supreme object of his interest, so he is often silent and preoccupied in the midst of noisy religious shoptalk. For this he earns the reputation of being dull and overserious, so he is avoided and the gulf between him and society widens. He searches for friends upon whose garments he can detect the smell of myrrh and aloes and cassia out of the ivory palaces, and finding few or none, he, like Mary of old, keeps these things in his heart.

It is this very loneliness that throws him back upon God. "When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up." His inability to find human companionship drives him to seek in God what he can find nowhere else. He learns in inner solitude what he could not have learned in the crowd - that Christ is All in All, that He is made unto us wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption, that in Him we have and possess life's summum bonum.

Two things remain to be said. One, that the lonely man of whom we speak is not a haughty man, nor is he the holier-than-thou, austere saint so bitterly satirized in popular literature. He is likely to feel that he is the least of all men and is sure to blame himself for his very loneliness. He wants to share his feelings with others and to open his heart to some like-minded soul who will understand him, but the spiritual climate around him does not encourage it, so he remains silent and tells his griefs to God alone.

The second thing is that the lonely saint is not the withdrawn man who hardens himself against human suffering and spends his days contemplating the heavens. Just the opposite is true. His loneliness makes him sympathetic to the approach of the brokenhearted and the fallen and the sin-bruised. Because he is detached from the world, he is all the more able to help it.
Meister Eckhart taught his followers that if they should find themselves in prayer and happen to remember that a poor widow needed food, they should break off the prayer instantly and go care for the widow. "God will not suffer you to lose anything by it," he told them. "You can take up again in prayer where you left off and the Lord will make it up to you." This is typical of the great mystics and masters of the interior life from Paul to the present day.

The weakness of so many modern Christians is that they feel too much at home in the world. In their effort to achieve restful "adjustment" to unregenerate society they have lost their pilgrim character and become an essential part of the very moral order against which they are sent to protest. The world recognizes them and accepts them for what they are. And this is the saddest thing that can be said about them. They are not lonely, but neither are they saints.

Thank you abigya,

The words leaped out of the post and straight into my heart ....as if the post were put there just for me.

The Lord has really spoken to me today through Tozer's words, I have pondered them again and again and felt such clear guidance and blessing.

For to me to live is Christ Phil 1:21

Deep message! I know because there are many times that I have felt alone in this world. I moved to Orlando FL, 6 1/2 years ago from my hometown, Chicago IL. to be close to my sister and her family. After several years, she moved back home and I stayed here. It has been rough being single & alone here in Orlando. I don't really like it. At times, I have felt like a flower trying to bloom in the desert but I know God has a reason & purpose for what He does. All I have to do is trust Him.

I know the feeling, Julia! Awesome article!!!

it is a very alone walk. amen. even before knowing Him, i walked alone, i didnt fit in, i considered this world rubbish. well, i still dont fit in but though i may appear to be walking alone, i am not alone. i praise God that the messages he has given me to preach is not falling on deaf ears. His Word will not return to Him void. amen. God is indeed turning the churches and His people is being awakened. amen. God is good and faithful. even, when i want to quit, the spirit is quickened and i fall upon my face before His throne.

Wow, Amen to the great truth in your message. This is exactly why I found this sight, no where in the World do I find a home for my heart, only in my brothers and sisters fighting the good fight do I see worldly our Saviors image and am reminded of his perfection because I make it a point to just trust Christ unwaveringly and forget that the Holy Spirit of God also works mightily in man and I can trust also those who live by the same Spirits guidance, i forget because Jesus is the only one I know who worships God, only the Bible and prayer have been my means of knowing God, until I joined this forum last night I only ever had the Holy Spirit saying " you are never alone, faith isnt seeing it is believing", and it surpasses believing and becomes just simply knowing because who else can I trust, who won't lie to me, whom else shall I serve but the one who freed me from enslavement and gave me new eyes to see truth and new ears to hear Satans lies and I will honor only he who gave everything simply so I may prosper eternally in love..

I can never repay such a debt and the fact that our Heavenly Father doesnt ask for any payment just for my love and trust, this makes me want to serve him more than anything knowing he wants nothing from me except me to live eternally in his love and fellowship.

To serve out of love and respect and to honor that which was given out of love selflessly and mercifully to all by the Most High is my only desire and ambition in life, but I admit in this World I have no idea what to do. I know how to be, even if most cant believe that after just 6 months and no guidance except the Bible that I am who I now am, I did nothing I just had no expectations of God existing and so when I met him I felt betrayed by everything and everyone in this World because I felt lied to so deeply I didn't dare be deceived again and I knew as long as I listened to what I know now to be the Holy Spirit then I knew I would find truth and never be a slave again.

I honestly dont feel Jesus should be seeked as a group until you have followed him alone at first so you know him without restrictions or pre conceived notions, because I never knew who I was or why I was until Jesus showed me my true heart without the World perverting it. And I truly love and accept my every defect because God loves them and they make us unique while of the same Spirit, and God delights in all different sorts and resides in all temples that truly worship him, both our individual temples and joint religious locales, God is everywhere and not restricted by anything.

Great message, came along to it right when I needed it the most.

I constantly struggle with trying to love the world over Jesus, only to realize that the world will hurt me (not always intentionally) and that Jesus will always love me. I forget what love is sometimes you know, I become so preoccupied with what's going on around me that it becomes me, and then I get angry only to realize (yet again) that it is me who hasn't been loving Jesus (not the other way around).

He wants to share his feelings with others and to open his heart to some like-minded soul who will understand him, but the spiritual climate around him does not encourage it, so he remains silent and tells his griefs to God alone.

I really like the quotation above because it refers to the desire to share with others who we really are, and how most of the time the environment doesn't suit it.

It's wonderful having you all here to talk with, and God is so good and for that I am greatful.

He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. Ecclesiastes 3:11

For some reason this verse is ringing out to me, not sure why, but there it is. :)

KJV makes more sense to me.
He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.

Some versions use "his" time instead of it's time and world instead of eternity.
Of course Jesus is not bound by linear time so his time is where he resides.

Eternity= no beginning and no end, always was and always will be.

John 3:13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
So Jesus came down from heaven but since heaven is eternal he never actually left heaven.

If Christ Spirit never technically left Heaven then Jesus was basically the physical manifestation of his spiritual reality? And if so are we then that have the Holy Spirit navigating represented in the Heavenlys in our true spiritual form just waiting for our earthly bodies to decay and release us fully? Lol ignore if I don't make sense

That makes perfect sense to me (I don't know about others) It's almost like a holograph projection.
If you are correct then that would explain a lot.

Ephesians 2:1-6 talks about being buried and raised with him 2000 years ago.
Ephesians 2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

1 John 4:17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.

That would also explain how this can be.

Heaven is his throne and the earth his footstool.
He is the head of the body so we are his feet.
Blessed are the feet of those who preach the good news.

John 15:3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.

John 13:10.Jesus answered, "Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you."
So he told the apostles they were already clean but he had not gone to the cross yet.
God does not seem to be trapped by cause and effect the way we are.
The Lamb was slain before the foundation of the world or from where we stand it is out of time and space altogether.
So it already happened before it happened.

Yes I tend to agree with you fully, to me God wrote the ending with
the beginning and all that we know as future has already came to pass in the eternal and is simply still being played out in our time/physical realm. To God maybe percieves only a day as we percieve 1000 years, time is only reality because God gave us the stars and heavens for a keeper of time faithfully, without these signs we would probably never have realized time because we never would have seen it changing...

Yes,cause and effect is reversible. You can't begin eternity, time and space is needed to even have an end or a beginning.

just waiting for our earthly bodies to decay and release us fully?
That would be one option, but there seem to be others that don't appear until the Holy Spirit teaches us about time and space from an eternal standpoint.

John 5:25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

A time is coming but it also "now is ".
Eternity is "now" because it's now or never.

Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

In the "now" this event already happened but in time and space it does not even makes sense.
In time we are waiting to be raised but if it already happened then why wait?

Romans 6:8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.
John 5:24 "Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.

It's hard to believe but scripture has it,"let every man be a liar but let God be true".

A lot to think about, so much mystery but somehow it all seems to have a place from some perspective just out of reach

Thanks for rwifnding, you made my journey a little less lonley.
Same to you brother it is a treat to ponder the wholeness of God with another whose passion and ambition is to know God more here on Earth even if all will be givin later it is my fun wondering now. And I rejoice in knowing I shall see in Heaven the Spirits whom I get to share these thoughts now with on Earth. God bless you all and I love you all and pray you be mighty in the Lord and givin prosperity abundantly Amen

The journey was never meant to made alone.
It is not good for man to be alone. Do not forsake the assembling together of yourselves.
A cord of three strands is not easily broken. Two can overcome one, two can keep each other warm.
Wherever two or more gathered in my name. We are love one another, prat for one another.
Bear one another's burdens, lift each other up in psalms and praise.
The body is not one member but many.
The idea of this "pilgrims progress" and doing it all on your own is a bunch of nonsense and unscriptural.
