Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and perform your vows to the Most High, and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me." Psalm 50:14-15 ESV
The sacrifice of thanksgiving isn’t when someone forces you to say “Thank you” even when you don’t feel like it. It’s actually an Old Testament sacrifice akin to the Thanksgiving holiday celebrated in modern times.
Leviticus 7:11-18 outlines how a sacrifice of thanksgiving was to be performed. Basically, the sacrifice was a kind of feast shared by God, the priest who facilitated the offering, and the individual providing the sacrifice. Individuals were even allowed to bring along friends or family members to share in the sacrificial feast.
This kind of sacrifice was different from one offered to cover over sins. It was a celebration of God’s goodness because of—or in spite of—the circumstances of the giver’s life.
Psalm 50:15 gives this reason for performing such a sacrifice: “Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”
Whether today is the best day ever or a day of trouble, right now is always the right time to celebrate God’s unshakable goodness. You don’t give God praise so He will help you, but as recognition that no matter what happens He is good.
Prayer: God, help me give thanks at all times.
