But when the people of Israel cried out to the LORD for help, the LORD raised up a rescuer to save them. His name was Othniel, the son of Caleb's younger brother, Kenaz. Judges 3:9
Twice in Judges 3 and several times in the following chapters, God’s people succumbed to the following patter: The people sin—God hands them over—the people suffer—the people cry out to God—God sends a rescuer.
God follows the repeated pattern of disobedience with a repeated pattern of rescue. He hears the cries of His people.
In Luke 17, Jesus hears ten lepers cry out “have mercy on us,” so He does. Although He’s aware that only a sidelined Samaritan will thank Him, the Lord rescues the other nIne who also cried out to Him (17:14, 18). It’s part of who He is.
In Psalm 73, Asaph recognizes God as the lone rescuer: “Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth” (73:25 NLT).
Rescuing is part of what God does. If you picked up this book because you’ve found yourself in the “suffering” stage, remember—like Old Testament believers, the lepers, and Asaph—you have a rescuer!
Prayer: Lord, thank You for always rescuing me.
