If we start in the "regular" order that most Bibles put the books of the New testament in. The first time we see Jesus speak is here.
Matt 3:14; But John tried to prevent Him, saying, "I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?"
Matt 3:15; But Jesus answering said to him, "Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he *permitted Him.
Isn't it curious that Jesus used a man's actions ( John the Baptist ) to "fulfill all righteousness."
Would Jesus have been fully righteous if John the Baptist wouldn't have baptized Him?
The very second passage we read where Jesus is speaking is when He is tempted by Satan in the wilderness.
Matt 4:1; Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
Matt 4:2; And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry.
Matt 4:3; And the tempter came and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread."
Matt 4:4; But He answered and said, "It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.'"
Matt 4:5; Then the devil *took Him into the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple,
Matt 4:6; and *said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, 'HE WILL COMMAND HIS ANGELS CONCERNING YOU'; and 'ON their HANDS THEY WILL BEAR YOU UP, SO THAT YOU WILL NOT STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.'"
Matt 4:7; Jesus said to him, "On the other hand, it is written, 'YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.'"
Matt 4:8; Again, the devil *took Him to a very high mountain and *showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory;
Matt 4:9; and he said to Him, "All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me."
Matt 4:10; Then Jesus *said to him, "Go, Satan! For it is written, 'YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD, AND SERVE HIM ONLY.'"
Matt 4:11; Then the devil *left Him; and behold, angels came and began to minister to Him.
Part of the "Lord's Prayer" as we like to call the passage in Matt 6 says "lead us not into temptation", and yet we are tempted quite frequently. In my case almost everyday.
It's a little surprising to some people that the Holy Spirit is the one who led Jesus out into the wilderness to be tempted ( verse 1 ).
Sometimes God allows us to be tempted. Satan demanded permission to "sift" Peter. ( Luke 22:31; ) Shortly after this Peter denied Jesus 3 times.
This passage is where much of a doctrine called "the Son of Man" comes from. Jesus called Himself the "Son of man" more than any other name. Now wouldn't being the
Son of God be much more important than being the son of a man? But Jesus had to be fully human. He had to feel what we feel, hurt like we hurt, be tempted like we are tempted.
Jesus had to overcome Satan as a man. In the passage above, Satan tries to get Jesus to use His "God powers" to do things like turn stones into bread, and make the angels catch you when you jump off the temple.
Jesus could have done these things, but He didn't. He defeated Satan using only the Word (scripture).
