The Real Anointing

Disciples and Apostles were never anointed with oil. In the New Testament Christians received the Spirit for their work of service. Oil was never poured upon Jesus: except by a womwn for his burial, as he said.

Before the day of Pentecost, priest's were anointed and carried the fragrance with them. But since the day of Pentecost, believers have carried the aura of Jesus. "They realised that they had been with Jesus" the real anointing had come.

Anointing with oil was retained only for the healing of the sick in the New Testament. Our anointing flows out of Christ's anointing, and we receive it only from him: "Of his fullness we have all received" To John the Baptist it was revealed that "Upon whom you see the Spirit decending and remaining on him, this is he who baptises with the Holy Spirit" He identified the source: Jesus Christ, the giver and the authority of the giving.

"God anointed Jesus of Nazereth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good, and healing all who were oppressed of the devil, for God was with him"

We may pray and lay hands on people to be baptised in the Spirit, as the Apostles did: but we must realise that a man cannot and need not give his anointing to someone else. It is out of the fulness of Christ, not someone else's fulness.

I want my own anointing from God, not a second hand anointing. To bestow an anointing, even as a temporary effect, is foreign to biblical thought. Jesus alone is the baptiser.

The blessings of God may flow in many ways through our lives as rivers of living water from Christ, but that is different from doing what only Jesus can do: impart the Spirit.

The virgins refused to share their oil and were counted wise. Value the anointing that God gives you; treasure it and allow it to empower you to be a blessing to others

Stephen I agree the anointing oil in the Old Testament was a type and shadow of the anointing of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament. How do you think that this verse fits into that:

Jas 5:14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:

Can that be correlated to the laying on of hands:
1Ti 4:14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

I personally believe that the anointing can be passed from one person to another (at the Holy Spirit's lead).

Bro Larry.......

Anointing with oil was retained only for the healing of the sick in the New Testament. my O.P.

Jas 5:14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:

You quote scripture that the anointing with oil was carried on in the early church for the healing of sick people...."and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the LOrd shall raise him up.........and sins forgiven"

What a wonderful resource. Such resource remains today

Can that be correlated to the laying on of hands:
1Ti 4:14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

Indeed it can brother

2 Tim 4: 14 refers to the gifts and graces of God given to Timothy, enabling him to do the same works that Paul did. 2Tim 1:6 1Cor 16: 10 Such power was given by prohecy and the laying on of hands. The prophecy was some prediction thet Timothy would be used of God.
2Tim 1; 18. 2Tim 4; 14

We can impart something of God as we pray for people. But we cannot be of help in our-selves....we rely completely upon Jesus as we pray in faith
