May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. Romans 15:5-7 ESV
God’s plan has always been to “...purify for himself a people for his own possession” (Titus 214). He promised the exiled Israelites a new experience of unity once He effected their return: “They will be my people, and I will be their God. I will give them singleness of heart and action, so that they will always fear me” (Jeremiah 32:38-39). His people’s unity was to be for His glory.
King David, a man well acquainted with strife, declared, “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1). He experienced firsthand that “if a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand” (Mark 3:24). Spiritual harmony allows for eternal purposes to be fulfilled. Jesus prayed for His followers “that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me” (John 17:23). Our unity in Christ is a testimony of God’s reality and glory.
Prayer: Grant me endurance, Lord, and encourage me toward unity found in Christ.
