John 7:44; Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him.
John 7:45; The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, "Why did you not bring Him?"
John 7:46; The officers answered, "Never has a man spoken the way this man speaks."
John 7:47; The Pharisees then answered them, "You have not also been led astray, have you?
The officers.... the officers in question here were the bouncers. The "muscle" of the chief priests and Pharisees. If you didn't tow the line, they sent Vinnie and Guido to give you an attitude adjustment.
It's interesting here that they sent "the officers" out to collect (arrest) Jesus, but the officers never get Him. The Pharisees ask, why didn't you bring Him?
The answer... No one ever spoke the way this Man speaks. It seems sometimes, even when we are told to do something by people in authority, Jesus has a way of speaking to our hearts.
Why did they want to have Jesus arrested? What happened before this? Jesus says...
John 7:37; Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.
John 7:38; "He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, 'From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'"
John 7:39; But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Out in the desert, as the Israelites were wandering around for 40 years, they needed a drink of water every now and then. Moses was told to strike the rock, (at least one time he was specifically told not to strike the rock).
Tradition says that as part of this feast, the priests would come out a pour water on the altar in remembrance of what happened in the wilderness. A celebration of how God took care of them.
As this is happening, Jesus stands up and says If you believe in Me, water will flow from you. It goes on to say that He was speaking about the Holy Spirit here.
So even though the Pharisees considered Jesus a trouble-maker blaspheming in the middle of their feast, "no one laid hands on Him".
