The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels. Revelation 3:5 ESV
Sardis was the first city to be converted under the apostle John’s preaching in that part of the world, according to Bible commentator Matthew Henry. And it is believed to have been the first city to have left the faith. After only a few-decades, the Sardis church was on life support (Revelation 3:1-2). That prompted Jesus to call for it to wake up and strengthen what little life remained—because only those who persevere have absolute assurance of eternal life.
Christian, you are called to conquer. You’re called to conquer your sin, your spiritual deadness, your spiritual formality, and your incessant desire to live on your own terms. Stop valuing self over sacrifice. You will never conquer perfectly because war is messy, but as long as you wrestle, and fight, and pray, you will be considered a conqueror.
Does this describe your current spiritual condition? Or are you close to being on spiritual life support like the Sardis church? If the latter, heed Jesus Christ’s warning today. Take up your spiritual weapons and prepare for battle.
You cannot win if you do not fight.
Prayer: Lord, at times, my spiritual life feels closer to that of Sardis than the one Jesus calls me to in today’s key verse. I pledge to begin the battle anew.
