The Offence of the Cross
by T. Austin-Sparks

"And I, brethren, if I still preach circumcision, why do I still suffer persecution? Then the offense of the cross has ceased." (Galatians 5:11).

The verse from which this title is taken suggests that if only Paul had continued to preach circumcision he could have avoided persecution and been freed from the inevitable offence which is created by the message of the Cross. It is an obvious fact that wherever the Cross of the Lord Jesus Christ has been faithfully preached it has not only brought hope and new life to some but also caused trouble with many more. Wherever this message has gone it has aroused antagonism. As it was a stumbling-block to the Jews and an absurdity to the Greeks in the first days, so it has ever since been unacceptable not only to men of the world but even to many religious people.

This is a fact, in spite of its being the most popular symbol. There is hardly a city in Christendom where the architecture, galleries of art, collections of literature and conservatoires of music do not give a prominent place to the sacred sign of the cross. It is a pity, then, that so much of the preaching and teaching in the Christian Church is either confined to the "Historic Jesus", which presents a crossless Christ, or to an interpretation of the cross which is much less than the Scriptural one.

Yet the consistent message of the whole Bible is that the Cross is God's way of salvation, His sufficient and His only way. It is further very clear that this has been the message which God has blessed to the salvation of men. It was dominant in New Testament days, and the recovery of, or re-emphasis upon some vital and essential phase of that Cross gave rise to such movements as are signified by names like Luther, the Wesleys, Whitfield, Moody, Spurgeon and many other God-honoured men.

Before we begin to discuss why the Cross has always been such a maker of trouble and cause of offence, we need to make it plain that no exception is taken to the heroics of the Cross or its aesthetics. Sacrifice, suffering, unselfish devotion, self-effacing service for the good of others, enduring the penalty of setting oneself against current evils; these are romantic elements which are popularly appreciated. It is the deeper meaning which the Bible gives to the Cross which provokes men's opposition, and it may be profitable to examine a few of these more closely.

1. The Cross condemns the world.

In the Cross Christ created a great divide between the old world and the new, a divide which cannot be bridged. Two distinctly different systems, scales of value, standards of judgment, sets of laws, stand contrasted on the two sides of the Cross. The system of each is not only quite different, but irreconcilable and forever mutually antagonistic. The cross demands an absolute distinctiveness of interest and objectives, relationships and resources. It draws the final distinction between the saved and the unsaved, between the living and the dead.

The apostle Paul said that by the Cross of Christ he had "been crucified to the world" and the world crucified to him. The Word of God emphatically declares that this age is evil and that "the whole world lieth in the wicked one". It says that the world's ways, motives, purposes, ideas and imaginations are all the opposite of God's. It further asserts that the world is utterly incapacitated from either receiving the revelation of the divine mind, growing of itself into the divine image, enjoying and appreciating real fellowship with God, or being entrusted with the privilege of co-operation with God.

Such capacities and relationships belong only to those whose new birth has delivered them from this present world. It is understandable that the world finds the condemnation of the Cross irritating and unacceptable, and it is to be feared that the presence of "worldliness" in the individual Christian life and in the Church is in direct contradiction to the essential purposes of the Cross. The Lord Jesus described His cross as being "the judgment of this world" (John 12:31). Those who follow Him must accept this verdict, and will consequently have to suffer from the offence of the Cross.

2. The Cross crucifies the flesh.

The Word of God declares that "our old man has been crucified with Christ" (Romans 6:6) and that "One died for all, therefore all died; and he died for all, that they which live should no longer live unto themselves, but unto him" (2 Corinthians 5:14-15). So far as God was concerned the history of the fallen race was concluded at Calvary. From that time onward, God's entire concern was the new creation. It is no use our trying to bring some of the old creation life into the new creation, for God will not accept it. Our human capabilities as well as our infirmities; what we call our better side as well as what we recognise to be our worst side; our goodness and our badness have all been included in that death. Henceforth we are called to live not on a human level but on a divine. In ourselves we possess nothing which is acceptable to God.

So often it is the assertion of some human element, some like or dislike, some ambition or some personal interest, which paralyses the work of God in and through us. To regard not only our sins but ourselves as having been taken to the Cross by Christ is the only way by which those purposes of God can be wrought out through our lives. It may seem strange that while we so often deplore our lack of spirituality, we are so slow to accept the verdict of the Cross on our natural lives. We find it humiliating to accept the same verdict on ourselves as has been passed on the world, namely that of death by crucifixion. Nevertheless there is no other basis for a really spiritual life and witness: the Cross must work out death in us in order that the life of Christ may be released in full expression through us. So there may be a sense in which the Christian also has to face the offence of the Cross. Only by really knowing the power of the fact that he is crucified with Christ can he know the blessedness of the new life. When it is truly "no longer I", then the way is opened for the affirmation: "but Christ that liveth in me". The end is glorious but the way is the painful way of the Cross.

3. The Cross casts out the devil.

Here we touch the deepest cause of the offence, for the world and the flesh are only the instruments and weapons by which the great hierarchy of Satan maintains its hold and its existence as the controlling force. As He approached the Cross, Christ said: "Now is the prince of this world cast out" (John 12:31). As Paul reflected on the deep meaning of the Cross he said that by it: "Christ stripped off principalities and powers, making a show of them openly, and triumphed over them" (Colossians 2:15).

It is perfectly natural, then, that the great hierarchy of evil should by every means and resource seek to make the Cross of none effect. By the "pale cast of thought" it will dilute the message of the Cross; by pushing in the world's methods and spirit it will sap the spiritual vitality of the Church; by stirring up the flesh, the self and the old Adam it will cause schism, strain and disintegration; or by making much of the human elements in its artistic, aesthetic, heroic side, it will be blind to the need for regeneration. Reputation, popularity, the world's standards of success, are all contrary to the spirit of Christ, but they are the attractions by which the enemy engrosses the minds of many, sometimes even Christian ministers.

If, therefore, the Cross is preached in the full content of victory over and emancipation from the world, the flesh and the devil, it is to be expected that by hook or crook the intelligent forces of evil will stop at nothing to silence it, and will stir up every cause of offence which can be laid to the account of the Cross. No wonder that this message is repudiated or misrepresented, since it is God's solution to the problems of fallen man. Crucifixion is a harsh end; it reveals the utterness of God's repudiation of everything which belongs to the old creation. To the believer, however, the Cross as presented in the gospel is the power of God unto salvation.

In conclusion let us not forget that the enjoyment of the full purpose of God, the experience of victory, and association in life with Him that sitteth on the throne in His glory are ours just in so far as we are one with the reality of the Cross as set forth in the Word of God. Perhaps it is best summed up for us in the words: "They overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb, and because of the word of their testimony, and they counted not their lives dear unto the death" (Revelation 12:11 ).

There is hardly a city in Christendom where the architecture, galleries of art, collections of literature and conservatoires of music do not give a prominent place to the sacred sign of the cross...

How true...should the enemy care if we fill the world with this symbol of Christs torture and death...no....no more than the crosses that line Flanders Field row on row can make our enemies retreat...

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high...

The white washed crosses of Christendom stand as testimony against us in our Christianize`d world, and the false security men and women have found in this symbol will surely be our nations biggest defeat....tho every man stake his lawn with a cross, and the christian banner wave high over every roof... and the cry of peace and safety be heard in the land...so few will take up the cross, and not love their lives, even unto death.

1Th 5:1 But about the times and their order, my brothers, there is no need for me to say anything to you. For you yourselves have the knowledge that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
When they say, There is peace and no danger, then sudden destruction will come on them...

Wow, that was a mouth full!

For me, though outstanding, your oratory leaves me half full...too much cross and not enough resurrection. In fact, If I'm not wrong, though you eluded to it, you never mentioned the word resurrection.

It has been my experience that too many individuals hang to close to the cross for their salvation. Though the most important first step toward our salvation, in its self, it does not bring salvation. It is the resurrection of Christ that gives new life to us and salvation. The cross, the forgiveness of sins for all, was preparatory to the salvation of the Resurrection.

Paul stated (paraphrasing) that the gospel he preached was the death, burial and the resurrection of Christ, never seperating them. And he stated, that if anyone hasn't come to the full understanding of the resurrection, he is to be pitied above all men.

Again, great discussion for mature Christians but for individuals new to the forum or seeking an understanding of Jesus Christ, a discussion of the cross without an equal billing of the resurrection could leave a new person seeking with their glass half full!

God's blessings and thank you for an intersting discussion!

Your probably not familiar with the author of the article, while he has a tremendous gift of teaching he was never very popular within chistendom during his day. This is an article that is dealing with the offense of the Cross of Christ.

He has many articles and a book or two that cover resurection. Sorry if it is too meaty for some, there is plenty of milk posted for those on liquid diets.

Another point to make, in my opinion, is the resurection is a useless and futile discussion or teaching when so many resist the cross and all it stands for. If there is no death there is no need for resurection.

It seems that the cross is indeed connected to salvation, but as in all other truth according to God, it is hid from the wise and prudent(i.e. scholastic achievers).

Very true and we can see the evidence of this truth time and again from the world.

Several years ago there was a Christmas parade in which several of the local churches got together and organized the affair. A church from the areaput together a float to participate in the parade, it had a big cross in the center with a red stained garment across it. The churches in charge of the event disallowed the float because, quote, they didn't want to "drag down the christmas spirit".

For me, 1Cor 1:18 says: The cross is foolishness to unbelievers. Unbelievers ("them that persih")can not understand much about a discussion concerning the cross or the resurrection.

The cross is indeed connected to salvation, with out it there would be none. It is the precursor to salvation which is forgiveness. We can not have salvation with out first forgiveness for our sinful nature. The cross took away the sins for all mankind and God said that he would not look at them again. The cross bridges the seperation between us and God due to our sin but in itself, it brings forgiveness not salvation. Your salvation is secured by recieving God's Spirit and life through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

For me, I consider myself a resurrection person. The crucifix is a very important symbol of how Jesus suffered for our sins but, I prefer to look at an empty cross, that Christ is not there, He as risen and His resurrection is what gives me his life and my salvation.

I think I understand where you are coming from here Joe, but let's try elaborating some. I don't want to get into a hair splitting contest but how do you reconcile your post with what Paul says to the believers at Colossi?

Colossians 1:19-23
For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, and by him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of his blood on the cross. This includes you who were once so far away from God. You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions, yet now he has brought you back as his friends. He has done this through his death on the cross in his own human body. As a result, he has brought you into the very presence of God, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault.

But you must continue to believe this truth and stand in it firmly. Don't drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News. The Good News has been preached all over the world, and I, Paul, have been appointed by God to proclaim it.

I was rereading the thread and guess I feel like I need to respond here again but changing my position a little from my previous comment on this same post.
In light of the many teachings within the new testament and especially Pauls teachings, in contrast to what is taught today, this article really is not meat but rather milk, it's just not watered down milk.

It is a basic and fundamental teaching in comparison to what Paul called milk. It only appears to be something deep when compared to today's christianity and it's paradigm.

Jiggfly,

First of all, let me apologize if any part of my thread had a tone of being a contest and I certainly don't take that from you.

You highlighted:
  • God reconciled everything to himself
  • by means of his blood on the cross.
  • He has done this through his death on the cross in his own human body.
I see nothing here that is in contrast to what I am trying to say and what Paul called the gospel that he preached: The death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Many, in Paul's time, witnessed the death of Jesus but was not convinced of his ressurection if they hadn't witnessed that too.
Pauls gospel was:
  • Death
That God reconciled everything to himself, not holding man's sins against him any more. He has done this through his death on the cross in his own human body, that He God became Man, human, and at the same time, through His Godly power, was able to bare the sins for all mankind for all time. God, who is spirit and can not die a physical death and, without sin, became man and became the sin of the world. In his human exsistence, He died on the cross and took away sin. He reconcilled us unto himself and forgave us for our sinful nature. God, through Jesus, died on the cross and gave us forgivess.
We are born with a sinful nature but, at the same time, we are born forgiven. God died on the cross one time, he is not going to do it again; and all mankind's sin is forgiven for ever more.

In your Colossians verse, I see nothing more that Paul talking about what God did for us on the cross; Paul didn't even mention the resurrection here. But, that doesn't take away from the gospel that he preached:
  • Death} that gives forgiveness
  • Burial} can't have a ressurection with out it.
  • Resurrection} that believing in the above on faith, gives you His life and your salvation.
Blessings,
Joe

Death Burial Resurrection

No death no resurrection. No cross no new life.

Close but not complete!

This is the gospel that Paul preached:
No cross no death. No death no burial. No burial no resurrection. No resurrection no life!

But there is an order, the cross must be taught, revealed, realized and experienced before resurection can be of any benefit.

What is commonly taught within Christianity today is incomplete also. If there has been no death experience then how can there be a resurection experience and if by chance there is a resurection experience what have they been resurected towards?

So few understand what was done at the cross. This being the case how can they possibly understand what the resurection means and how it benefits us? I think many are decieved and beleive that the cross is something that we don't need to experience. For many "deny self take up your cross and follow me" is just a nice sounding cliche used on Sunday.

Jiggyfly,

Dear Sister,
I get the the insinuation from you, that you think, that I or my discourse deminishes the value of the cross; nothing could be further from the truth.

Because of Paul, I put it first in order as he has taught me in 1 COR 15:3&4: the death, burial and resuurection. And what does verse 17 say?: "And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are STILL in your sins."

Again, the cross took away your sin from the eyes of God, that is forgiveness and forgiveness alone. The cross is the initial step towards salvation which is forgiveness but, in itself, the cross does not give salvation.
We are not continually dead to sin until we recieve the spirit of God (Jesus Christ) in us ( living in us) and that is only possible because he was resurrected and is alive! Again, His living Spirit in us is what keeps us continually dead to sin and alive in God.

We are only saved through faith in grace; grace being the free gift of God's death on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins AND the the recieving of God's resurrected life through Jesus Christ, which gives us spiritual life, not our life but His who lives in us. Christ death on the cross can not give you life and salvation, his resurrected life can and does. Not until we recieve the totallity of his grace, his death and resurrection are we saved. From that point, we remain dead to our sins but we are not dead to sining.

Thank God for His new covenant.
In the old covenant, sins were just managed (covered for) by the shedding of the blood of Bulls and Goats and only once a year on the Day of Atonement and every year for thousands of years.

In the New Covenant, there is no shedding blood of Bulls and Goats.
Jesus died one time and his blood was the final sacrifice. Unlike the old covenant, Jesus blood was not a covering of sin, his blood took away sin from the eyes of God for ever and his blood washes us still.

I respectfully give you the last word on this post.
