"If only the LORD had killed us back in Egypt," they moaned. "There we sat around pots filled with meat and ate all the bread we wanted. But now you have brought us into this wilderness to starve us all to death." Exodus 16:3 NLT
When the going gets tough, some resort to complaining. The free become victims. The rescued want an invitation to return to bondage. It’s hard to blame the Israelites for doing what every human does. Maybe you’ve been there.
God rescued more than a million people from Egypt, where conditions were harsh and the people were oppressed. They wanted to be rescued. But when help came, the people seemed to prefer bondage. Why?
Maybe they thought freedom would look different. Maybe they didn’t think they would miss their meat and bread. As odd as it sounds, they may have become used to abuse.
When you choose to follow Christ, you experience rescue and freedom. But it’s possible to rejoice one minute and then want to return to the bondage of your old life the next.
In a statement of delusion, the Israelites described their slavery in Egypt as having food aplenty. It’s possible to wrongly identify your old life as having plenty too. This thinking always takes a short view and refuses to consider contentment in new life living.
Prayer: Lord, when I entertain foolish thinking and want to return to a painful past, help me remember that You rescued me from something so I would have access to something so much better.
