The apostle Paul was writing to Timothy, and here he asked him to make every effort to come to him quickly because Demas, in his love of this world, had deserted him. And he mentioned Alexander, who did great harm to him, for he had vigorously opposed the message Paul was teaching to the people.
2 Timothy 4:16-18 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)
“16At my first defense, no one stood with me, but everyone deserted me. May it not be charged against them. 17But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message would be fully proclaimed, and all the Gentiles would hear it. So I was delivered from the mouth of the lion. 18And the Lord will rescue me from every evil action and bring me safely into His heavenly kingdom. To Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.”
Making it Practical
My intention here is not to go into the history of what happened to Paul and to look at who all was responsible for what took place, but to look at how this can be applied to our lives today. Do you identify with Paul in any way here? I do! For as followers of Christ, the closer our walk of faith in our Lord becomes, and the more serious we take God and His commands, and the more we step out in faith and do what our Lord calls us to do, as His followers, the more other people will separate themselves from us.
But why will they do this to us? Well, if we truly take God and His Word to heart to obey it, and if we step out in faith and we begin to share the teachings of Christ and of His New Testament apostles with other people, Christians and non-Christians alike, since we live in a day and age when the gospel is largely being altered to make it less offensive to the world, and when the “feel good stuff” is being pushed, and while the “hard truths” are being ignored, more people will reject the hard truths for what feels good.
God’s Calling
And since God’s calling on my life for the past 22 years is for me to write down what I am learning during my times with the Lord in His word each day and then to post these writings on the internet daily so that the internet can “run with it,” that puts me in a category that is a little odd for a lot of people to accept. In some ways it is like being in the situation as some of the prophets of old, like Jeremiah, for example, but without being a prophet but only being a servant of the Lord doing what He has called me to do.
They say to the seers, “Stop seeing visions!”
and to the prophets, “Do not prophesy to us the truth!
Speak to us pleasant words; prophesy illusions. (Isaiah 30:10 BSB)
I get this a lot! So did Paul. So did Jesus. And it is very popular today to encourage the “light and fluffy” stuff and the “feel good” messages while ignoring the hard truths which are necessary and critical to be taught to the people. “Short and Sweet” is most popular while anything of much length or depth of understanding of what the Scriptures actually teach with regard to how we must live as followers of Christ is often rejected or cast aside as “works salvation.” But that is a coverup to hide the truth of the gospel.
If God is Calling You
So, if God is calling you to step out from your comfort zone and to take the teachings of the Scriptures, taught in the correct biblical context, to the people, Christians and non-Christians alike, which includes covering subjects which need to be talked about but which are largely being ignored, be prepared that you might lose some friends, or that your church fellowship may now reject you and cast you out, or that friends and family may desert you or ignore you or think you have “lost it.” For it will cost you.
Nonetheless, God will not desert you if you are on His side doing His will serving His purposes for the salvation of human lives for eternity. The Lord will stand with you, and He will strengthen you. He strengthens me a lot! He will give you the strength and the courage to be bold in your witness in sharing the truths of the Scriptures which the people of this day definitely need to hear, if what you are speaking is the truth and not the lies which are so popularized these days. We just have to keep persevering in His strength.

Why are you weeping and breaking my heart?
I’m fully ready to suffer for Christ.
If I must die for the sake of His name,
I am convinced it will not be in vain.
Glory to God and to His Son Jesus,
Who has redeemed us; bought with His blood.
May I speak to you? Jesus came to me;
Asked of me, “Why do you persecute me?”
He said, “Now get up and stand on your feet.
Go, and you’ll be told all I have for you.
I have appointed you as a servant,
And as a witness; you have been sent.”
“Go into the world and preach the gospel.
Open the blind eyes. They will receive sight.
Turn them from darkness to the light of Christ;
From power of the evil one to God,
So they may receive forgiveness of sins,
And a place among those who’re in heav’n.”
