You are right. The Protestants rejected some of the false Catholic religion, but they hung on to the gist of it.

I don't care if anyone calls me a Protestant.
Referring to Catholics, Orthodox and Protestants is just an efficient way to lump all of the followers of Romanism together.
Protestants kicked out the Catholics, but they held onto the false religion.

Thomas Linacre
In the 1490’s another Oxford professor, and the personal physician to King Henry the 7th and 8th, Thomas Linacre, decided to learn Greek. After reading the Gospels in Greek, and comparing it to the Latin Vulgate, he wrote in his diary, “Either this (the original Greek) is not the Gospel… or we are not Christians.” The Latin had become so corrupt that it no longer even preserved the message of the Gospel… yet the Church still threatened to kill anyone who read the scripture in any language other than Latin… though Latin was not an original language of the scriptures.

Always remember, it is all about your relationship with Christ. Do you have a personal relationship with Him. Because on judgement day, you are not going to care what Others has done! Christianity was "banned" in the Roman Empire until the Emperor "Constantine" came into power (AD 325). He decided as an attempt to "unify" all religions in Rome Constantine took all the false religions including Christianity and started a new National Religion called, "The Roman Catholic Church" This is why we find all kinds of false traditions in the Roman Catholic Church today!
