Ye shall be Witnesses unto me Acts 1 : 8
In the context of the Acts of the Apostles...not the acting of the Apostles...the Acts..the speaking and the doing of the Apostles. Witnessing was the accurate giving of evidence of what the disciples had seen, heard, and knew of the LOrd Jesus Christ.
You remember that after he had opened their understanding, to see the real meaning of the scriptures concerning Himself. He said to them, "Thus it is written and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day; and that repentance and the remission of sins should be preached in His Name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem" Later He added "and ye are witnesses of these things"
Now the clear implication there is this........the disciples were to witness to a Scriptural Christ - for He had opened their understanding to know the scriptures.
They were to witness to a Suffering Christ - for He had shown how it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise again.
And they were to witness to a Saving Christ - for he had told them that in the Name, the precious Name, repentance and remission of sin should be preached among all nations.
In order to present a Scriptural, Suffering, Saving Jesus, they needed the enduement of the Holy Spirit....Their task was to make Jesus real to men, the Jesus of the bible, the Jesus of the cross, the Jesus of the gospel. And that task cannot be performed without the power of the Holy Ghost
There is not a Christian worker who has not discovered regretfully, how futile it is to try to make Jesus real to men and women without the power of the Holy Ghost
