Proverbs 10:8-11,17-18,29-30 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)
8A wise heart will receive commandments,
but foolish lips will come to ruin.
9He who walks in integrity walks securely,
but he who perverts his ways will be found out.
10He who winks the eye causes grief,
and foolish lips will come to ruin.
11The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life,
but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
17Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life,
but he who ignores reproof goes astray.
18The one who conceals hatred has lying lips,
and whoever spreads slander is a fool.
29The way of the LORD is a refuge to the upright,
but destruction awaits those who do evil.
30The righteous will never be shaken,
but the wicked will not inhabit the land.
Now, the book of Proverbs is in the Old Testament, but much of what is taught in the Old Testament is repeated for us again in the New Testament. We who believe in Jesus Christ to be Lord and Savior of our lives are not under the Old Covenant liturgical, ceremonial, sacrificial, purification, circumcision, dietary, and Sabbath laws. But we are under God’s moral laws which are taught much here in the book of Proverbs and throughout both the Old Testament and the New Testament. So let’s learn together from this.
The Human Heart
The human heart is the center of our being, of who we are as individual people, which includes the mind, soul, spirit, character, temperament, and emotions. It is the substance of who we are in character, thinking, believing, reasoning, decision making, personality, desires, and the like. It is what makes us who we are as individuals. And we are not all the same. God did not make us all the same. He gave us each distinct characteristic traits so that we are each uniquely who we are and not carbon copies of all others.
Now, because the first man that God created sinned against God, all of us who are born into this world are born with sin natures. God did not create us with sin natures, but we are born in the image (likeness) of Adam, born into sin, separate from God, and unable within ourselves to be approved by God. So God the Father sent His Son Jesus Christ to the world and to the cross to put our sins to death with Him so that, by faith in Him, we will deny self, die to sin, and obey God and His commandments in life practice, in God’s power.
A Wise Heart
So, a wise heart is one which recognizes Jesus Christ for who He is and which submits to Him as Lord, and which follows Him wherever He leads us in obeying His commands and in doing all that He says we ought to do. For not only does He have commands we are all to follow (New Covenant), but He has specific callings on each one of our lives, which are our “body parts,” spiritually speaking, within the universal body of Christ, His church. And He has gifted us all uniquely with Spiritual gifts which we are to put into use.
But He has also given us a “moral compass” which we are to follow, which are His moral laws which we are to keep to, as His followers. For the grace of God, which is bringing us salvation, is training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to life self-controlled, upright, and godly lives while we await our Lord’s return. If we do that, we will be people of integrity who live what we say we believe. For Jesus gave His life for us that we might deny self, die to sin, and follow Him in obedience to His commands.
A Foolish Heart
But not everyone believes in Jesus Christ. And many who profess faith in Jesus do not follow Him in obedience to His commands, but they remain in their sin, living for the flesh, doing what their flesh desires, and not what God requires. So they act and behave foolishly, in selfishness, yielding to the desires of the flesh which are still holding them in captivity to sin. So many of them, then, buy into a cheapened gospel of grace which does not require that they deny self, die to sin daily, and follow our Lord in obedience.
Many of them will put on a show of righteousness for human approval but while they lie and cheat and sin in secret. And if corrected, if they are, they ignore the reproof and they continue to go astray. They may deny what is stored up in their hearts because they don’t want anyone else to know. And if they feel confronted, they may attack the ones trying to help them, perhaps even with slander and false accusations. But if sin is what they practice, and not obedience, they will not inherit eternal life with God.

Tenderly He speaks, softly so.
Gently He calls - His will to know.
Won’t you invite Him in your heart?
Humbly accept Him now.
Bow before Him with contrite heart.
May you obey His will.
Seek Him with all your heart and soul,
And your heart, His Spirit fill.
Jesus died to free you from sin,
Giving you new life to begin,
Walking with Him ev’ry hour,
Obeying His commands.
Won’t you trust Him to be your Lord?
His grace you can’t afford.
Freely He gives you peace within,
When you turn from all your sin.
Live for Him ev’ry passing day.
Meet with Him; read His word and pray.
Serve Him in the way He leads you,
Doing all that He says.
Do unto others as you would
Have them do unto you.
Love them with Jesus love within you.
Your hearts to God be true.
