The entire assembly then decided to continue the festival another seven days, so they celebrated joyfully for another week. ... The entire assembly of Judah rejoiced, including the priests, the Levites, all who came from the land of Israel, the foreigners who came to the festival, and all those who lived in Judah. There was great joy in the city, for Jerusalem had not seen a celebration like this one since the days of Solomon, King David's son. With the death of wicked King Ahaz, his twenty-five-year-old son, Hezekiah, ascended to the throne. Hezekiah was the complete opposite of his father. “He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father David had done” (2 Chronicles 29:2), meaning wholeheartedly, as King David was a man after God’s own heart. Hezekiah also shared David’s love of worship, as did another son of David, Solomon, whose original dedication of the temple some two hundred years earlier was legendary.
Hezekiah’s celebration likewise filled everyone’s heart, Jew and foreigner alike, with wonder and joy. Solomon and Hezekiah foreshadow yet another “Son of David” who would offer the fullness of worship “in the Spirit and in truth” (John 4:23) to the entire world.
Prayer: Father, may I be a son of David today, leading others into joyful worship!
