Let my cry come before You, O LORD; Give me understanding according to Your word. Let my supplication come before You; Deliver me according to Your word. My lips shall utter praise, For You teach me Your statutes. My tongue shall speak of Your word, For all Your commandments [are] righteousness. Psalm 119:169-172 NKJV

The foundation of our prayers, praise, and thanksgiving is God’s unchanging Word. In the first couplet of today’s reading, the psalmist cries out to the Lord and appeals to Him for understanding; he entreats the Lord for deliverance based on His own promises. The psalmist has no fear of asking God to listen, because he knows God has already spoken and will always act according to His Word. The writer’s confidence isn’t in his own sincerity but in what God has made known.

In the second couplet, the writer’s heart overflows in praise and song. Coming to God to be filled always overflows back to God in worship, “for the mouth speaks what the heart is full of” (Matthew 12:34). When you fill your heart with God’s Word and experience its truth, marvel at its insight, and feel its power, you will not be able to contain the praise that comes.

Cry out to the Lord and ask for understanding; entreat Him according to His promises; praise God because He has made known His will; sing to your Father who is wholly righteous and good!

Prayer: Father, You are my confidence and joy!
