But the people of Israel broke faith in regard to the devoted things, for Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. And the anger of the LORD burned against the people of Israel. Joshua 7:1 ESV
God told His people to follow His instructions carefully as they moved into the promised land, but Achan stole from God and hid the goods.
When Joshua called the people together to ascertain who had sinned, the Spirit pointed out Achan from the tribe of Judah.
Can you hear the gossip and slander months later? “You shouldn’t date her; she’s from that clan” or “What do you expect? Isn’t he from Judah’s Carmi clan?” Achan’s disobedience impacted the whole group. Disobedience always does.
Jesus told a similar story about a disobedient manager who abused his employees and partied while the owner was away. The manager’s end and Achan’s are surprisingly parallel (Luke 12:41-48). But their end is not your end, nor was it the end for Judah.
Later, David wrote: “God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah…And those who love his name will dwell there” (Psalm 69:35-36 NIV).
God, the divine fixer-upper, rebuilds for anyone who loves Him.
Prayer: Lord, help me see and be grateful for the ways You rebuild my life.
