THE ESV DOESN'T SAY CHRIST IS COME IN THE FLESH

[1 John 4:3 KJV] "And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that [spirit] of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world."

[1 John 4:3 ESV] "and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already."

The ESV and other Bibles don't say Jesus Christ is come in the flesh

Doug, this is another selective comparison that creates a problem that is not actually in the text.

The ESV is not denying the incarnation. It is summarizing the same test John is making in this section, whether someone confesses Jesus as the Christ and therefore truly from God. The broader passage clearly supports the incarnation, see 1 John 4:2 and 2 John 1:7.

Even in 1 John 4:3, the meaning is not removed. It is simply stated more concisely. The idea of Jesus Christ coming in the flesh is still the background assumption of the whole letter.

Your argument depends on isolating one translation and ignoring the surrounding context, which consistently affirms the incarnation. This is not a contradiction between Bibles, only a difference in wording, not meaning.

May Jesus fill us with his love and wisdom

What does it say in the ESV the Gospel of John 1:1-12 ?

You may make of it as you will
