It began with Abraham.
God gave him the sign of the circumcision as a token of the covenant He gave to him
Genesis 17:11 KJVS
And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.
What covenant?
Genesis 12:2-3 KJVS
And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
[3] And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
What does this refer to?
Galatians 3:14 KJVS
That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
So the blessing, which is the covenant is the promise of the Spirit.
Abraham was to circumcise every male child as a token of this covenant. The word used for token refers to a distinguishing mark or sign. It is to create a distinction.
In this circumcision, there is a cutting off of the foreskin
And whatever is cut off by circumcision can't be restored back again. Once circumcised, always circumcised. You cannot uncircumcise a man. Circumcision is permanent!
This physical act is a pointer to a future reality...the promise of God to Abraham, which is the Spirit.
Romans 2:29 KJVS
But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
Circumcision is in the spirit.
Philippians 3:3 KJVS
For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
We are the circumcision because we are in the Spirit.
The circumcision of God is the Spirit within.
What did God cut off from us in this circumcision?
Colossians 2:11 KJVS
In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
Colossians 2:12 KJVS
Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
He cut off sin and death from us and resurrected us by His life. This He did by His Spirit.
How many times is a man circumcised? Only ONCE!
That circumcision stays. It is permanent.
Can what is cut off in circumcision be restored again? NO WAY!
For how long will a man circumcised by God remain circumcised?
Permanently. Forever. God only circumcises ONCE.
John 14:16-17 KJVS
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
[17] Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Absolute terms. He dwells with you; abides with you, and is in you FOREVER!
In our circumcision, God cut off sin and death from us.
Can sin and death ever find its way into us again? NO WAY!
Once cut-off, permanently cut-off.
Romans 6:7 KJVS
For he that is dead is freed from sin.
We are FREE from sin.
John 5:24 KJVS
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
We have passed from death to life.
That's the circumcision of God!
Paul calls this circumcision the Mark of Jesus
Galatians 6:17 KJVS
From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.
The word Paul used here for mark, is stigma. It is something used to stamp the name of a Master on His slave. It proves that he now belongs to that Master.
Paul established same though elsewhere
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 KJVS
What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? [20] For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
And here too
Ephesians 1:13 KJVS
In whom ye also trusted , after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.
So this Mark of Christ, which is seal in our hearts...is His Spirit in us!
He is saying, don't trouble me with physical circumcision (because false teachers were saying a man who is not physically circumcised won't be saved); I already have the circumcision of God. I belong to God. He has marked me!
What a joy!
Today we can say the same with Paul.
Let no man trouble me with death or hell
Let no man trouble me with threats of the Holy Ghost leaving me
Let no man trouble me with any second work of grace
I bear in me, The Mark of the Lord Jesus!
I have been circumcised by God
Once and forever
Eternally separated from sin and death!
Forever indwelt by the Spirit of God.
Glory to God
