The Church Tolerating Sexual Immorality

“I know your deeds, and your love and faith and service and perseverance, and that your deeds of late are greater than at first. But I have this against you, that you tolerate the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, and she teaches and leads My bond-servants astray so that they commit acts of immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols. I gave her time to repent, and she does not want to repent of her immorality. Behold, I will throw her on a bed of sickness, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of her deeds.” (Revelation 2:19-23 NASB1995)

This was a letter (only quoting it in part) to the church in Thyatira. This was a message to them from Jesus Christ. This was written to the church which, for the most part, seemed to be in line with God and with the Scriptures. But they fell short in one very critical area, which is the same main critical area that the church, at least here in the USA today, is also falling short in. They were tolerating the promoting of and the acting out of sexual immorality, sexual idolatry, and adultery among the people within the congregations.

And one of the biggest ways this is being done today is first of all by altering and diluting the gospel of Christ to where it no longer requires death to sin (repentance) and walks of obedience to our Lord’s commands in holy living. The majority appear to all be teaching that a profession of faith in Christ alone will assure them forgiveness of all sin and a guarantee of entry into God’s heaven when they die, but regardless of how they live. And many are pacifying people living in addictive sin, rather than leading them to repent.

Some of the erroneous teachings of today are that once you have made that profession of faith in Christ, now all your sins are covered by the blood of Christ, including all future sins, and God will no longer judge you if you sin. Added on to that is the teaching that says that once you make that profession of faith, God can no longer see when you sin. When he looks at you, all he sees is Jesus. And then if they should feel guilty for their sin, they are just being told to “claim who you are in Christ” to alleviate the guilt.

But, biblically speaking, you are not “in Christ” unless you have died to sin, you are putting sin to death daily, by the Spirit, and you are walking in obedience to the Lord and to his commands, in practice, by the grace of God, in the power of God living within you. Doesn’t mean sinless perfection, necessarily, but it does have to do with how we live in practice, either in sin, or in walks of obedience to our Lord. And the Scriptures teach that God can certainly still see when we sin and he will judge the unrepentant sinners.

According to most statistics I have read on “sexual addiction Christian recovery groups’ internet sites,” over the course of multiple years, porn addiction, and all that goes along with that, is very high in numbers among males who call themselves “Christians,” including those who pastor church gatherings, and at a lesser degree among females. But the numbers are increasing among children and teenagers, from what I have gathered. And that really breaks my heart. A lot of that because of smartphones.

From my own experience, I have found that most pastors I have come across don’t want to have to deal with sexual immorality, and/or they take the side of the addict instead of the side of the ones the addicts are sinning against. And from what I have been able to gather and discern, it seems to me that the majority of pastors are not going to deal with this biblically since it appears most of them are not teaching the necessity of death to sin and walks of obedience to God. So they end up pacifying the sin, instead.

So those who are living in addiction to sexual immorality, in its various forms of expression, are rarely being pressed to repent or to not be included in the fellowship of the church (see 1 Corinthians 5:1-13). So the sexually addicted to what is immoral, adulterous, evil, and hateful, continue on in their sinful addictions in replacing God and spouse with a substitute, ignoring and rejecting God’s commands and marital commitments, and persisting in what is pure evil, while many of them continue to profess Jesus as their Lord.

But Jesus Christ taught that to come to him we must deny self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin), and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to living in sin and for self, we will lose our lives for eternity. But if we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and we walk in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in his power, then we have eternal life with God. For not everyone who calls him “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING (obeying) the will of God (see Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).

Your bond is broken with your Lord and Savior
And your testimony is separate from Him.
Your words not matching your actions today.
Repent of your sin and bow down and pray.
Live what you testify in truth always.

Purity’s lacking in your life and witness,
For you profess one thing, but other you do.
Not moral, spiritual. Still of the flesh.
Not living in truth to what you confess.
Lying about it puts you in a mess.

Living a lie is your practice, ‘tis true of you.
Masquerade righteousness – none of it true.
Your heart is not given to your Lord God.
Because of how you live, you are a fraud.
Turn from your sin and give your life to God.
