Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD! Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart, who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways! Psalm 119:1-3 ESV
The psalms often praise the value of living a blameless life. People who live that way know God’s teachings and obey them consistently. Maintaining a commitment to God’s direction is often thought of as a matter of willpower or desire, yet today’s psalm offers another aspect of obedience that may be even more effective than human willpower.
If you want to leave sin behind, consider that the act of repentance is both a turning away from sin and a turning toward God. Repentance is a new direction in which a heart that was set upon sin finds a new desire: to be fully committed to seeking God.
When this daily pursuit of God occupies the majority of your “stray” thoughts, it opens you to the power of His Spirit working in your life. You no longer work at cross-purposes against God or struggle to choose between two warring desires. With a single desire in your heart to seek a God who loves you, you’ll find that sin will become less of a temptation.
Prayer: Father, help me to turn toward You so that I can pursue You and Your love wholeheartedly.
