Your statutes have been my songs In the house of my pilgrimage. I remember Your name in the night, O LORD, And I keep Your law. This has become mine, Because I kept Your precepts. Psalm 119:54-56 NKJV
The psalmist has kept the teachings of the Lord on his mind as a song and as his last thought each day so that he can remain obedient to God’s law. By keeping the teachings of the Lord on his mind, he makes it that much easier to avoid temptation and willful sins. This practice became a life-giving habit that he freely passed along to others.
What fills your mind each day? What are you listening to, watching, reading, or pondering? However, you answer that question, it’s likely your answer will help determine whether it’s easier to obey or disobey the teachings of scripture. Immersing yourself in examples of self-fulfillment, self-indulgence, and even hostility toward others will make it much harder to exhibit the humble self-sacrifice that Jesus modeled.
Filling your mind with songs about God’s goodness, meditating on scripture before bedtime, or reading a book about scripture can be a useful way to fill your mind with God’s direction. You can spend your days with scripture at the front of your thoughts, and your mind can drift off to sleep in harmony with God’s teachings.
Prayer: Jesus, help me to keep Your teachings at the front of my mind each day.
