Hallelujah Glory to GOD!

i would like to show something about testing the spirits.

1 John 4:
1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

There is a misunderstanding among (some) of us Christians who believe (i also believed this in the past myself) that in order to test spirits you only have to (or just) had to ask that spirit: "Do you confess that Jesus Christ is God Come in the flesh?"

Because i interpreted the verse as spirit and spirits that means spiritual beings? That is what i thought:

And if the spirit answered with a yes, i thought you could rest assured they are of GOD. Because un unclean spirit supposedly never could say : yes, so i believed. If the answer is nothing or a mumbling etc then these are not of God. And yes you could ask that question but i have found out that that is not what this verse means as it is DANGEROUS to trust in that mere voice AS: demons can and will say yes also! so you can't trust this method of testing (this listening in to a spirits voice: yes or no) method of testing! Just listening to a voice is certainly not enough!

As:

James 2:
19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

The devils know very well that Jesus Christ is The Son of God and that He is The Lord and He is GOD.

As:

Mark 5:
7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with Thee, Jesus, Thou Son of The most high God? I adjure Thee by God, that Thou torment me not.

If you ask a demon or an angel of light do you confess that Jesus Christ is God in the flesh sure they can say yes.... and thereby deceive you because you let your guard down!

Matthew 8:
29 And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with Thee, Jesus, Thou Son of God? art Thou come hither to torment us before the time?

So you can never be sure by just asking that question, as it is not enough! i used to think that also but i got to listen to the wrong voice even after i thought i tested it! You cannot trust on merely a voice!

Do not rely on this mere question! it is dangerous!

You are not going to be save if you rely on just asking a spirit a question, they will LIE!

You cannot just trust on a voice, that is also not what this means to test a voice you hear inside of you no no! it is not enough! As you need to put things to the test ALWAYS by the Scripture: The Word of GOD test the voices if they are of GOD! Even if a voice in your mind says yes I confess that still does not mean this voice is from GOD! Just hearing a voice confess is not enough! Compare Always with Scripture!

i used to think that was what this Scripture of 1 John 4:1 meant but later i found out it's meaning is deeper:

Then what does this Scripture mean?

It doesn't so much talk about hearing a voice to confirm a spirit (angel or demon) is of God, no it talks about the spirit's of people.

1 John 4:
1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

What i see in this Scripture is not only is it: spirits as in demons or angels -but refers to the spirits of man, and their conversation i mean: the person you hear speaking or teaching and also from people around you a man or a woman, from their own spirit. Is it operating by The Holy Ghost are they of the Truth (born again Spirit filled Christian) or are they of an unclean spirit? And The Bible Calls us to test the spirits and this refers to both as in voices of persons and / or people themselves. Are they of the Truth? or are they false? because many false prophets are gone out into the world!

i can give you an example, to show what i see in this Scripture, after i learned not to trust merely in a voice that answeres my question and confesses that Jesus Christ is God in the flesh, they still can be operating in the false.

1 John 4:
1 Beloved, believe not every man, but test the spirits within the people / their conversation whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.*

*my own emphasis inserted, to make it easier to show my point.

As we go on

2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.
5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

In verses 5 and 6 you see they are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them: is like they have a worldy tongue the world hears them they are not like the true children of GOD. On to verse 6: We are of God, someone that knows God hears other Christians conversation and recognizes them and he that is not of God (not born again) will never understand, their conversation is different and i mean not just tone of voice but also in doctrine they error! They do not have the Holy Ghost.

Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

Hereby can we discern / test / know the voice of a man born of GOD, being of the truth (children of God), and the voice of the man of error (children of the devil) / false prophets.

Two ways (spiritual and physical) as it is spiritual and also by hearing them actually physically for instance: asking this question to a muslim, indeed he will not confess that Jesus Christ is GOD The Only Lord and Saviour The Only Begotten Son of GOD that is GOD Himself Come in the flesh, he will deny this and yes through asking this simple question it is easy to know if someone is of the Truth or not. If someone says no then they are not of God (antichrist) by default.

But it goes deeper than that if you are unsure (someone may say yes) then you need to TRY the spirits, test them more !

my point is we as Christians need to check on things more then just merely asking and hearing a spirit (of a person) confess that Jesus Christ is God Come in the flesh, that is not always enough if the answer is yes to be more certain you need to listen to that voice's doctrine and try the spirits and see whether they are of GOD as many false prophets have gone out in the world!

1 John 4:
1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

in other words:

Do not just believe anyone, but TEST them and TRY them and see if they are of The Truth: because there are many false teachers out into the world!

You need to really ask through! (put someone to the test, TRY the spirits)

Let me show you of an example:

one day i talked with a lady and i told her i got born again ! And that i believe in The Lord Jesus Christ and to my amazement she gladly smiled and said: "Yes O me too!!!!" and shook my hand as if to congratulate me with much enthousiasm! i then quickly already thought and assumed she is my sister in The Lord and she got born again too, this is so great! i was so happy! to meet a new sister in Christ friend... But later in our conversation after asking some questions, and after trying her doctrine some i soon realized more: i found out she believes in the new age: "Ascended master false jesus", in other words: o she confesses Jesus alright, but it was another jesus! And only after TRYING her spirit -thus her conversation (asking her questions like: how did you become saved?, how did you experience that?, who is Jesus? Who is God? Other Questions can be asked like: What is The Bible to you? Is The Bible The Only written Word of GOD? How can someone enter into Heaven? How many ways are there to Heaven?) by trying i found out that she is of another spirit! her belief was of another kind and was false! and even though she was so friendly and loving i believed she was of The Lord for a while it had me fooled! And she herself was not aware of it herself that she was not really saved (she thought she knew Jesus!) so i by Gods Grace told her about The True Lord Jesus Christ Who is The Son of GOD and Is The Almighty God Himself The Only Way, The Truth and The LIFE: The Only Way to The Father: The Lord Jesus Christ.

i hope that my explanation will be Blessing in Jesus Name, be careful as many false prophets are gone out in the world.

TRY the spirits (check out the people, really check the people out and hear them, any voice: a voice from TBN, a voice of a prophet at your local church) , try them whether their conversation is of The TRUTH whether they are of God! be careful as many false prophets are gone out in the world.

We test the spirits by The Word of GOD, that is The standard, without The Word of God you really can't test!

Do not just always believe your pastor or the preacher on TV, try them and be on guard! Do not just accept anything too quickly.

i hope that this has somewhat may be of help to you to add, build some more understanding!

God is GOOD!

Glory to GOD!

God Bless you,
dutch

I agree it is referring to the testing of the spirits of men, particularly prophets (those who preach the Word of God), and not the testing of angels or demons.

There is no need to test the demons because all demons are not of God. And angels do not need to confess that Christ came in the flesh because angels are not saved.

I agree it is not the only test to be applied.. the specific context in this verse is the Gnostics who denied that Jesus came in the flesh.

This does not mean that other tests do not apply.

A main test is to confess that Jesus is Lord. Demons cannot confess that Jesus is Lord, only a saved believer can do this. But then if they confess Jesus is Lord, yet deny the Trinity or deny that Jesus came in the flesh.. they are not of God.

I get your point re: the false Jesus. There is a false new age Jesus called the cosmic Christ, or the universal Christ. I have seen this from the writings of liberal Christians or church leaders that are involved in multi-faith things. What they write seems biblical until they add the word 'cosmic' in front of Christ.
Child prodigy artist Akiane who some think is a Christian, paints pictures of the cosmic Christ and other new age things.
This false Christ is often portrayed as a perfect human being, a man with skin as smooth as a baby's and long flowing hair, against a backdrop of a galaxy or stars. Whereas the bible portrays Christ as a physically average , if not unattractive appearing person as one would expect of someone who lived a hard life.

I'm inclined to think that there is no simple quick answer. The Devil will readily agree that Jesus is Lord, but he will not endorse Jesus as his Lord. Truthfully, the success or failure of our relationship with Jesus is whose will we prefer to follow. A number of people are impressed with the sayings of Jesus. Allow him to be Master of their heart and will? That's quite another story. The Book of Revelation mentions that the very elect may be deceived, and likely will in the last days. It's all about trust, faith, and its evidence that you're on the right track. Keep your wits about you, treat all people with dignity, and never be afraid to give God credit where it is due. We all have warts and blemishes, but you will know if the hand of God is doing the guiding. Cheers, John
