Temptation vs Sin

Loyal
It seems some Christians are not aware of the difference. But temptation is not sin.

Jesus Himself was tempted.

Matt 4:1; Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
Mark 1:13; And He was in the wilderness forty days being tempted by Satan; and He was with the wild beasts, and the angels were ministering to Him.
Luke 4:2; for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, He became hungry.

However Jesus did not yield to the temptations.

1 Cor 10:13; No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.

There is no temptation we have to yield to. None!! When we sin, it's because we decide to.

Even though Jesus was tempted... He did not sin.

Heb 2:18; For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.
Heb 4:15; For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.

==================

James explains this.

Jas 1:12; Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.
Jas 1:13; Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.
Jas 1:14; But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.
Jas 1:15; Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.
Jas 1:16; Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.

When we are tried and tempted... this is how know where our heart is! God already knows where our heart is, but we don't. However when we give in to temptation, that reveals where our heart is.
When we resist temptation, that is how we get approved, we aren't "approved" simply by virtue of being a Christian. You also have to be an overcomer.

Jas 1:14; But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.
Jas 1:15; Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.

Temptation gives way to lust, and lust gives way to sin... once sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.

Noticing a woman is nice looking is not a sin. Thinking a house or car is nice to have is not a sin.
Jesus was hungry, He hadn't eaten in 40 days, being hungry is not a sin.
Jesus wanted the kingdoms of the earth, wanting them is not a sin.

As far as "raging hormones" go... it makes no difference why you sin. Do you control you body, mind and emotions, or do those things control you?

However if you dwell on the thought of a that woman, entertain impure, sensual thoughts about her (and she isn't you wife) ... then.. (and only then) have you crossed over to sin.

If Jesus would have bowed down to Satan, He would have crossed over to sin.
If Jesus was obsessed with wanting the kingdoms of the world rather than doing what the Father told Him to do.. that would have been sin.

Having sex is not a sin (if you are married)
Having money in your pocket or bank account is not a sin.
Thinking a new house or car would be nice to have is not a sin.

However when you obsess about these things and they become your god, and they are more important
than God to you... it is sin. Fornication, and Adultery is sin. Entertaining sensual thoughts about a woman you aren't married to, is sin. (If this is a problem for you... hey, get married)
If money is so important to you, that you have to lie, cheat, steal, and take advantage of people to get it, it's sin.
If you are coveting someone else house, car or wife and obsessing over it all the time, thinking of ways to get these things (kill your neighbor, steal from him, lie to him.. etc... ) that is sin.

Temptation is what reveals the state of your heart. Do you give in? Or do you...

1 Cor 16:13; Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.
Gal 5:1; It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
Eph 6:11; Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.
1 Pet 5:9; But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.
Jas 4:7; Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

Rev 3:5; 'He who overcomes will thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.

Exod 32:33; The LORD said to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book.

Rev 2:7; 'He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will grant to eat of the tree of life which is in the Paradise of God.'

Rev 2:11; 'He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes will not be hurt by the second death.'

Rev 2:17; 'He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, to him I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it.'

Rev 2:26; 'He who overcomes, and he who keeps My deeds until the end, TO HIM I WILL GIVE AUTHORITY OVER THE NATIONS;

Rev 3:12; 'He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he will not go out from it anymore; and I will write on him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God, and My new name.

Rev 3:21; 'He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to His abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: that the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: Whom having not seen, ye love; in Whom, though now ye see Him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:

Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
1Peter 1:3-9

Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our LORD: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength. Nehemiah 8:10

Heb 12:4; You have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin;

I've seen posts from certain people with hypothetical questions like....

"what if".. you were hiding Jews from the Nazi's or something similar.
Would you lie to the Nazi's?
Why do you have to give them an answer at all? Because they might kill you?

Matt 10:28; "Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Rev 20:4; Then I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

Do you fear men so much that you are willing to betray God?

interesting being tempted is not sin, but is our flesh that allows us to be tempted in the first place making known to us that we have a sinful nature?

What must occur for something to be a temptation?? I mean really I would not be tempted in a lot of sinful things because they disgust me now, so the temptation simply is not there, yet there are other things that still tempt me but these things are less and less but never the less they are still there.

Our flesh which is sinful wants the temptation, but our spirit which is born again will fight against our flesh and give us victory over sin when we have Jesus Christ in us, is the way I see it yet if we did not have a sinful nature we would not need to fight against our flesh.

I mean there are certain things that may tempt some people but have actually no power at all tempting other people because they simply do not desire them in the first place.

So how does our sinful nature, temptation, and sinning and being born again all relate to each other? my thought is we now have power to over ride our sinful nature that we did not have before, but we still have a real fight against the sinful nature that will always be with us while in the flesh. that is why practicing sin is not something a born again Christian does we have the power to over ride it with our born again spirit Jesus Christ give us the power, but never the less we still have to fight against the flesh with the spirit. And just giving into the wrong thought for a few seconds is sin, (which I would consider stumbling)

Having a "sinful nature" is not a sin either. I was once an "assistant counselor" (for lack of a better term) in a men's addiction group.
It was interesting to see that out of 40 or so men, they all had different tendencies.
For some, the temptation always had to do with alcohol and drinking.
For others the temptation always had to do with gambling and money.
The biggest group was, as you might expect, men who had problmes with pornography, sex, fornication and adultery.
These are just a few examples. But you get the idea.

You are speaking of something all these men have experienced. There is a couple of discourses in the Bible about this.

Rom 8:5; For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
Rom 8:6; For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace,
Rom 8:7; because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so,
Rom 8:8; and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Rom 8:9; However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.
Rom 8:10; If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.
Rom 8:11; But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

Unfortunately "raging hormones" would fall into the "flesh" category.

Rom 8:13; for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Galatians is similar.

Gal 5:16; But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.
Gal 5:17; For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.
Gal 6:8 ; For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.

One conversation that came up once between a few guys went like this. I was listening, and I knew all of these guys pretty well.
"I could sleep in a room full of naked women, and it wouldn't be much of a problem....but I couldn't sleep in a liquor store without drinking everything in sight".
That surprised a ot of guys, but he explained looked at pornography, and goes months and months without being intimate with his wife. It just isn't a
priority for him.
A second man said.. "I could sleep in a liquor store no problem, I wouldn't take a single drink. But I couldn't sleep in a casino. I would be broke in
an hour. (as a side note: This man had over $20,000 in credit debt)
A third man said.. "I could sleep in a liquor store or a casino, no problem... but a room with 10 women would be a problem".
Another man didn't have a problem with women, He had a problem with other men.
What we learned from that is... we all have a tendency to sin... not always in the same way. But everyone of us has a weakness, and just about all of us
know what our weakness is.

Peter says this....

1 Pet 5:8; Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
1 Pet 5:9; But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.

Obviously Peter is speaking to Christians here... (firm "in your faith", unbelievers have no faith or power to resist). Satan doesn't go after unbelievers,
they already belong to him. He goes after believers. He finds a weakness in them, after a while it becomes a stronghold. The sin becomes ingrained in
them. They are so used to doing it, it becomes a part of who they are. But Jesus can break down these strongholds. (it's up to us not to keep rebuilding
them).

Knowing you like money, alcohol, or sex isn't a sin (that's the sinful nature).
Giving in to the temptation is the sin.

Matt 26:41; "Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
Mark 14:38; "Keep watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."

never the less we still have to fight against the flesh with the spirit. And just giving into the wrong thought for a few seconds is sin, (which I would consider stumbling)

It isn't the thought for a second or two you have to worry about. If you woke up from sleep walking, it might take you a couple of seconds
to realize what room you are in. Sometimes it takes us a few seconds to realize we are headed down the wrong path. OK now you recognize it.
Now what? Do you keep going down that path (that would be sin). Or do you turn to another path.
During those few seconds it takes for us to realize where we are isn't always a sin. It's what we do after we recognize it.
Sometimes it helps to recognize the patterns.

This is from a comic strip I saw in a newspaper several years ago.

I'll go for a drive today.
I'll go for a drive today, but I won't drive past the store.
I'll drive past the store, but I won't go in.
I'll go into the store, but I won't walk down the candy aisle.
I'll walk down the candy aisle, but I won't buy any candy.
In the last picture they have chocolate all over their face.

Where did this person go wrong? Is going for a drive a sin?

Matt 6:13; 'And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.]'

As part of the Lord's prayer, we are supposed to ask "lead us not into temptation". Why? Does God tempt us? No but he allows Satan to tempt us.
Job was tempted, but he didn't sin.
Sometimes we pray this prayer, not even thinking about what is means... we don't want temptation, but then we go buy cigarettes, or a bottle
of vodka, or a playboy magazine... then we wonder "why God failed us".

Job 1:22; Through all this Job did not sin nor did he blame God.
