I cry out to God; yes, I shout. Oh, that God would listen to me! Psalm 77:1 NLT

Asaph, the author of Psalm 77, was an honest, courageous prayer. Yet even the strongest believers can struggle with big questions and serious doubts.

Asaph spent his life serving God. But that didn’t shelter him from the harsh realities of life. Slowly, the injustice he saw around him—the prosperity of wicked people who lived their lives for themselves and reaped all the benefits—began to wear on Asaph. His faith was shaken. Why waste my time obeying and serving God, Asaph wondered, when others disobey and prosper and live to boast about it?

Asaph’s doubts were not unique, but his response was right on target. He was a man of faith about to go over the edge—but he was still a man of faith. Stopping to look at the world through God’s eyes, he finally understood that the prosperity of the wicked was only temporary. And he saw himself—foolish for a moment, but loved and guided by God.

So what if I don’t get all the perks in this life? Asaph realized. If I have God, I can know true satisfaction and will enjoy great rewards in the life to come.

Prayer: Steadfast Lord, I too struggle with big questions and serious doubts. Use Your Word and these pages to solidify my faith in You.

Adding encouragement to pray.

James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. 8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

James 4:3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

Believe Him that you shall receive wisdom and answers from the Lord and not things that is not good for you nor really help you.

Romans 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. 14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

John 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. 9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.
