Take courage as you fulfill your duties, and may the LORD be with those who do what is right." 2 Chronicles 19:11 NLT
All work that involves people requires courage.
Jehoshaphat’s work involved hundreds of thousands of people—and it took courage every day. So, when he blessed the workers in Judah, his blessing included the appeal to “take courage.” He knew that the recent jobs he had assigned required assessing motives and handing out decisions. He also knew courage’s bravery and resolve were necessary for completing these tasks (2 Chronicles 18-19).
Paul’s actions also required courage. When he waited two years in jail for the authorities to finish trying his case (Acts 24:27), he had the courage to think through the wisest approach he could take to make things right. Bravery and resolve led him to employ a specific Roman law in his defense. He eventually appealed to Caesar (Acts 24:1-25:12).
The psalmist’s lyrics inspire courage when he writes, “Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous” (Psalm 112:4 NIV).
Like Jehoshaphat, will you pray for courage for yourself and others?
Like Paul, will you muster the courage needed to face the darkness?
Prayer: Lord, give me the courage to walk out of the darkness and into the light that “dawns for the upright.”
