Therefore the princes said to the king, "Please, let this man be put to death, for thus he weakens the hands of the men of war who remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man does not seek the welfare of this people, but their harm." Jeremiah 38:4 NKJV
The prophet Jeremiah, never the most optimistic of people, had more bad news for the Israelites: “This is what the Lord says: ‘Whoever stays in this city will die by the sword, famine or plague, but whoever goes over to the Babylonians will live. They will escape with their lives; they will live.’ And this is what the Lord says: “This city will certainly be given into the hands of the army of the king of Babylon, who will capture it’” (Jeremiah 38:2-3)
No one wants to be told they have to surrender to the enemy. The idea of surrender goes against one’s sense of freedom, and not fighting seems to point to a lack of faith. But faith isn’t doing what seems right—it’s doing what God says and trusting that He has a plan.
Jeremiah wasn’t advocating for a Babylonian takeover; he was telling the Israelites to surrender to God.
If you are in a similar situation, forget your individual freedoms. Stop fighting. Surrender to God’s will. Trust Him and He can show His power through you, even when you’re somewhere you never thought you’d be.
Prayer: Lord, I surrender to You.
