If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but are yourself lost or destroyed? Luke 9:24-25 NLT
Jesus faced the choice between self-preservation and self-sacrifice for the benefit of others. He saw the darkness of death and the pain that He had to endure on the cross, but He still chose to surrender Himself to God’s will and to seek the blessings of others above His own benefit, His resurrection and new life brought about the greatest gain possible for you. When He asks you to stop hanging on to your life and to even surrender it to God, He knows both how daunting it can seem—and how much promise and possibility await you.
Jesus reasoning is clear and sensible, even if it’s still hard to accept. You cannot hold on to your life. Whatever you do to protect it will ultimately fail. True freedom is found in surrendering your life to God and then trusting Him with your whole heart to determine what will happen in the future. Letting go of your own life places it in the safest place possible—entrusted to God.
Prayer: Jesus, help me to surrender my life to Your care as I remember Your suffering and sacrifice for my benefit today.
