Matthew 5:1-2 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

The depth of these promises is almost inexhaustible.

2. Matthew 5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

A. Those who mourn those who (grieve) for their sinful moral condition.

B. When we recognize our broken and weak condition.

C. Mourn is the Greek “pentheo” Grieve
<o> </o>
D. Our Godly sorrow that works true repentance.

E. I need the <st1lace w:st="on">Constance</st1lace> conviction of the Spirit.

F. I am so weak; I am so unable to walk before God without the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

G. When you grieve over it, it causes you to walk softly before the Lord.

H. When we grieve over the sins of the world.

I. For they shall be comforted, the Greek here is “parakaleo” means to call near, to exhort.

3. Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

A. Refers to those that have been humbled before the Lord.

B. The meek are those who quietly submit to God.

C. Who when insulted are silent or, return a soft answer
<o> </o>
D. In their patience, keep possession of their own souls.

E. Who are not easily provoked to anger;
<o> </o>
F. Shall ultimately share in the <st1lace w:st="on"><st1laceType w:st="on">kingdom</st1laceType> of <st1laceName w:st="on">God</st1laceName></st1lace> here on earth.

4. Matthew 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

A. The righteousness of justification.
<o> </o>
B. The imputed righteousness by which we stand righteous in God's sight, being freed from condemnation.

C. The longing for a deeper spiritual walk, given by faith in Christ and the Cross.

D. Testimony (of my personal hunger)

E. As the natural man hungers, so does the regenerated soul hunger.
<o> </o>
F. You’re not going to hungry if you’re already full.

G. If you want to be filled you must realize you don’t have it now.

H. The only righteousness we can obtain is By Faith (Luke 18)

5. Matthew 5:7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

A. The Greek translation is compassionate.

B. These are the ones who do all they can to help those in misery.

C. There is no mercy in unregenerate man (just the I syndrome)

D. Jesus himself became the ultimate example of mercy.

E. Mercy was obtained at the Cross.

F. by both sympathizing with them, and distributing unto them;

6. Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

A. The word pure is translated in the Greek as Clean,
Which is a Levitical word.

B. Those whose motives and thoughts are pure.
C. This speaks of a person that is saved, and not to the unsaved.
<o> </o>
D. That is, whose minds, motives, and principles are pure. Who seek not only to have the external actions correct, but who desire to be holy in heart, Man looks on the outward appearance, but God looketh on the heart.
<o> </o>
E. In opposition to the Pharisees, who affected outward purity.
<o> </o>
F. The process of sanctification is ever transforming us into his image.
<o> </o>
7. Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
<o> </o>
<o> </o>
A. Once again refers to a saved person.
<o> </o>
B. These are the ones transformed by the power of the Gospel.
<o> </o>
C. These keep the peace in their house, on the Job, and recover or restore peace when it is broken.
<o> </o>
D. These have experienced the peace that comes by way of the Cross. And make attempt to bring peace.
<o> </o>
E. Those who strive to prevent contention, and strife, and war.
<o> </o>
F. A peace-maker is a man who is being endowed with the power of the Holy Spirit to bring reconciliation to the contenting parities.

G. The perfect peacemaker is the Son of God
