So Azariah the priest went in after him, and with him were eighty priests of the LORD--valiant men. And they withstood King Uzziah, and said to him, "[It is] not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the LORD, but for the priests, the sons of Aaron, who are consecrated to burn incense. Get out of the sanctuary, for you have trespassed! You [shall have] no honor from the LORD God." 2 Chronicles 26:17-18 NKJV
During King Uzziah’s fifty-two year reign in Judah, he saw many successes, and he went down in Judah’s history as one of its good kings. But pride got the better of him at one point and he entered the temple to burn incense on the altar. Azariah and eighty other priests confronted him. Uzziah was angered by their actions, but he caught leprosy as a result of his sin and spent the rest of his life in an isolated house.
Azariah and the other priests are a model of what to do when a believer sees a fellow believer entering into sin. They withstood Uzziah’s wrath for his own good, and ultimately their intervention spared his life.
If you’ve been in Uzziah’s shoes, you know it wasn’t an enjoyable situation. But praise God for people who loved you enough to rescue you. And if you’ve even been in Azariah’s shoes, bless you for your concern for Christian brothers.
Christians need each other to stay on the narrow road.
Prayer: Father, thank You for surrounding us with other believers who love us enough to confront us when we stray into sin.
