Strangers
A long time ago, there was a woman and a man… they are strangers in their past lives when they meet for the first time in a local state university. They talked not and they never even shared a smile… but, when God intercedes, these two strangers become friends… this is their story…
The girl, in her mid- teens was so timid and aloof. She only talked a little when asked but never shared more than what she thought is needed. She works alone, and goes home alone… she is like that, and that’s what she called life.
The boy on the other hand is very outgoing. He is in his early twenty that he had more “experience in life” than her. But, in spite of the fact that he is adventurous and lively, he is a man who had struggles more than anyone could bear. He is a man who changed school in his 3rd year in college because he was involved with “worldly” life away from the world he wants. He is a man that chooses to become someone he never thought he would come up to be…
When these two strangers meet, they have nothing in common that they don’t become friends in an instant after a simple acquaintance. It’s only a simple “hi” and “hello”, an obligatory one because miss girl is a senior than he in terms of having been the first to be admitted in the school. And that was the rule, you may be younger, but when you start school headfirst then you are the senior… no question asked.
After a few meetings, the two becomes group mates in a youth gathering, both are newbie’s in their faith and they both are working hard to fathom the thing they knew would changed their lives… though they are still a little bit strangers, time lapses that a certain group activity turned their lives upside down… two strangers becomes friends…
The girl isn’t aware that the friendship causes her heart to beat a little outrageous. She became so aware that when the boy missed a certain activity, the girl missed him more than what is normal. She thought, maybe, just maybe, the changes in her could be bearable and okay so long the boy doesn’t know. It was then the beginning of her secret life. She could smile alone while thinking of him, she become so excited whenever the boy talked to her, she became so alive by the mere presence of him. He is not only a dear friend for her, he turned to be her inspiration to do things better.
The boy on the other hand has nothing to do with the girl, for him she is just a friend… nothing more, nothing less. Good that he doesn’t know about the girls’ affection…or else he will surely keep a good distance between them. But, since he doesn’t know, the story continues… they are good friends, that even on her 20th birthday, the boy managed to form a group to serenade her… well, that was so normal in their university, but for the girl, that was heavenly. She treasured every second of it…
Later, the girl graduated and move out of the university bringing with her memories of her secret affection. She had moved out, and the boy remains in the university carrying on with his normal university life. Taking exams; going out with his friends and colleagues; taking semesters break and going on a fellowship in a church. While the girl went on a career she hopes could give her satisfaction and joy. She, on the other hand, enjoys partying with her new found peers and going out to places to unwind. Until, she receive a text message from a girl friend she used to have way back her university years. It said that the church is having a caravan near her place and they are inviting alumni’s to join the caravan as it travels from one place to another. And since the girl missed her college life and the people she used to called “family” she jump on the activity. They meet once more and talked and laugh. But something strange happened, the boy isn’t the same boy she used to know… he is quite reserved and aloof and doesn’t mind the girl the same way they shared at the university. The girl was saddened and dared to cry when she happened to know that the boy and her girl friend are now in a relationship the girl could now only wish was hers. While the people around them are singing heavenly song, the girl felt so lonely that it seems that hell is trying to deprive her with the happiness she longs in a long time now. But, that was it; she could do nothing about it. She doesn’t own the boy; they are just friends in the first place…
The girl went home with a burdened heart, she thought that time would be great because she is going to see him again after a long time, but, things turned the other way around, she could not manage to change things now. The boy was in love with her girl friend. That was the fate, he could never be her lover… they are just friends… so, the girl goes on with her mundane life, went to other place to start anew… and decided to forget about him… and she did…. After a very long time, she did manage to consider her memories about him a better sweet part of her life.
Years passed, they did not communicate, the girl didn’t mind him anymore, and she had a good share in life that she becomes busy with what she considered life. She worked hard, and changes one work to another to make sure that she is in the right truck towards her dream. Until she becomes exhausted and bored that she decided to go home and make things a little bearable. She decided to take up something she find interesting…
But fate has its own way of surprising life unexpectedly. The girl now turned out to be a woman, again meet the man in her university days… now, a matured seasoned man. He remains beautiful inside out, and he is still the man of her dream. Not so grand, very simple but a godly man. A man any woman will spend longer hour down her knees to pray, to beg God with all HIS might and power to make their dreams real… well, that happened when the girl went to the university to get something done. She travels alone and lonely… on her way home, on the bus, the man… her friend… texted her. It said that he himself is on his way home from work, if she could just wait for him a little while he would be happy to join her on a ride home. Of course the girl smiled secretly, she was amused with fate, and she thought God must be joking… He knows this event is coming. And He knows when would be the right time to do so… the girl waited for him, and the two of them shared a long funny ride home. The man still doesn’t know about the girls feelings except that he knows they are friends… but the girl gave God a million thanks again and again for directing the story to this momentous day.
Along the way, the two talked and talked… just the way they did in the old days. The girl shared her story to the man but very cautious not to slip her tongue and ruined this glorious day. She is so glad that after very long years, they remain friends… even just friends, that was enough for her. To ask God more than that would be too much. She is contented even that only last for four hours and they need to separate ways. She is happy to have that time to share to him her emotions concerning things in her life. That was enough time for her to learn something from him… that was enough to make her life a bit easier… that was enough…
The man doesn’t know much about her, the same way the girl to him. All she knew was he is the same man she used to “love” secretly, it is just that, he is now better and refined. He is more matured the way he deals with his life and his spiritual journey. The man, though they sat side by side doesn’t discern that the girl beside him was thanking God for that day. That the girl smiles differently compared to her normal days, that she was shaking and excited to be with him, that she hoped that time would not end, that she wished things would be different now… though the truth is they are just friends… and friends they will be… but for her, that was enough…
And then…
That was the story of the two strangers who becomes friends… and friends they will remain. The story that the girl wished would have another episode. The story she hoped would begin with a “long time ago” and HOPEFULLY will end with “they lived happily ever after”. The story that is not a fairytale to be told to enchanted little girls but a story that will give ENCOURAGEMENT hopeful girls who believes in “TRUE LOVE WAITS”…
