Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle. 2 Thessalonians 2:15 NKJV

The church of Thessalonica wanted answers. When was Christ coming back? How would they know it was really Him? What if they missed His return?

When faced with big questions, people are apt to believe sources that sound plausible, even if they aren’t true. That’s where the trouble starts. When people form opinions based on things they’ve heard but haven’t verified, they are less likely to believe the truth when it does come along.

This is the problem Paul addresses in 2 Thessalonians 2:1-2: “Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers and sisters, not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us—whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter—asserting that the day of the Lord has already come.”

Instead of being shaken by fearful lies or rumors, Paul wanted the people to cling to the truths they knew, to test rumors against the traditions Paul had taught them.

When you hear something troubling from people you know or see something questionable on social media, you should definitely ask questions, but you should also test the answers against what you know to be true. A man of unshakable faith stands fast on the truth.

Prayer: God, help me to be firm in my faith and test rumors against Your Word.
