Soul and Spirit

Mod's, please don't hesitate to move this thread if it is off subject please. Also don't hesitate to smack me around if it's a double post.

So I have seen discussions about the difference between the soul and spirit recently. Not only that, but detailed explanations about what they are and what they do. I found this certain topic to be very interesting, so I made a thread about it. So:

What is a soul?
What is a spirit?
What is the difference between the two?
Are they different at all?

It would be awesome (and also expected) for biblical scriptures to be provided to back up your explanations. Maybe even some external research as well, that might be acceptable.

Yes. There has been lots discussed.

They are different, because the bible separates them.


1Th 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Word separates the spirit from the Soul.

Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.


God puts us (spirit) in our bodies.
Zec 12:1 The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.

We are created in the Image of God, who is also spirit, but we also have a body.

1Co 15:48 As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.
1Co 15:49 And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.

Our souls are not what get saved. It's us, or our spirit man. We need to be renewed with the Word to get our soul in line with our born again spirit, and Holy Spirit.

Jas 1:21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

Soul: psuchē
Spirit: pneuma

Soul, same word we getpsychologists or study of mind, is our mind, will, emotions. It's our thinking.

Spirit, or heart of man, inner man is us in our physical bodies.


Soul can also be used to describe a person.

They where a lost soul.
There were many happy souls at the parade today.

So, we have a body, a soul, and we are spirits.

Our brain, which our soul connects to this outside world can be damage to where the connection is hindered or lost. So the Soul can be cut off from interacting with the outside World.

but without our spirit, the body dies.

Jas 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

I appreciate the input Brother Mike, a lot of information has been taken in. I do have some questions for you though:

This part of your post is in question:

I can see clearly in your explanation, you say souls are not what get saved. Then the scripture listed below that, says our souls are saved by the word.

This did provide me with a little confusion, but I can put two and two together. Either it implies that spirit is the same as soul (which they were obviously separated before hand, so this eliminates this assumption), or it's two different types of saving. One would be eternal life, and the other would be safety and security in this life (or good morals).

What do you think Brother Mike?

A second thing I would like to talk about if that is okay is:

Would it be possible to assume that our brain actually is the soul itself?

Right.

Heb 10:39 But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

Paul believed in being Born again, he also believed in the Saving of the soul..

Heb 10:39 But we are not of those who go back to destruction; but of those who have faith even to the salvation of the soul.

Rom 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

The whole thought would to get our thinking in line with the Spirit of God and our born again spirits, born of incorruptible seed by the Word of God.

We can also use.......

We saved many souls today!!

So, we saved many people.

The Brain is a flesh organ. It's part of the body.

Many believe that with the complex and advanced function of the Brain, there must be something else behind our thinking and creative ability.

Mat 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

Mar 8:36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

The soul defines who we are. Jesus separated it from our mind, or thinking. Our soul makes up our very character.

The brain handles all the input and out put. We are suppose to fill our soul with the Word.

So, how our soul interacts with our brain, I suppose will be known someday, we know though it's not our spirits, our soul is for this natural realm, our spirit understanding things in the realm of the spirit.

Intuition (1 Cor. 2:11)
With our spirit we contact, receive and contain God.

The soul of man:
mind- (Ps. 139:14; Lamentation 3:20)
will -(Job 7:16;6:7)
emotion- (Song of Solomon 1:7; Ps. 86:4; Samuel 5:8)
The soul as it is renewed by the word will express and reflect God

This verse shows us that there are things which only the spirit of man knows, and which the soul is unable to know. This function of our intuition has the capacity to know and discern apart from human reason or circumstantial experience.
