Then Solomon spoke: "The LORD said He would dwell in the dark cloud. I have surely built You an exalted house, And a place for You to dwell in forever." 1 Kings 8:12-13 NKJV

This is the day King Solomon publicly dedicates the golden temple to the praise of the Lord’s glorious name. Three fast facts stand out.

First, everyone shows up: Elders from throughout the land. Every priest and Levite. The nation as a whole. And then, the Lord Himself shows up and fills the temple (1 Kings 8:1-13).

Second, Solomon blesses the people by reminding them that the Lord God has kept His promises to his father, David. That is, Solomon is firmly established as Israel’s king and has finished building a gorgeous temple for God’s honor and praise (1 Kings 8:14-21).

Third, Solomon kneels down, lifts his arms toward heaven, and offers a magnificent and wise prayer of dedication (1 Kings 8:22-54). This rich prayer echoes many key themes from the books of Moses. It’s truly inspired by God and His Word.

Sometimes after your best day serving God publicly, you can linger on its memories too long and begin falling away. Instead, give all the glory to God and “make it your ambition to lead a quiet life” (1 Thessalonians 4:11).

Prayer: Lord, sometimes You bless one of Your men with public success. Instead, may I lead a quiet life.
