I know that there is a poll Q on here aboput what version of the Bible you read. I do not want to start a debate I was just seeing how many versions of the Bible there are. I am wondering why it is necesary to have so many of them. I would love to see an orgianal one. I have a NIV and KJV version that I read regularly. I am just not sure why there should be so many versions. I fear that much of the information gets lost in the process.

Original one = 2,000 years old Greek / Hebrew would be the original ones.

Versions of the Bible = one *true* version

Translations = many. Ask the Holy Spirit to suggest (nice request yes? :) a translation for you. Something you can read and study easily. The Holy Spirit of course, above all gives all wisdom and understanding in the first place. After all, He is the Author of the Bible.

If you can handle the old english, try KJV Study Bible. Others recommended Gideon's and Young's translations as well. I currently use NKJV Study Bible and in the past, have used NIV (no longer), ESV (English Standard Version).

We forget that the bible remains a best seller in the world of books. I cannot say if this has any effect upon there being so many variations. I suspect that it will have.

The danger is that many are not versions of the bible at all, but are a paraphrase of the bible. A paraphrase is a statement giving the meaning of another statement, a loose or free translation. To paraphrase means to explain or translate with latitude.

The mormons have their own bible, so do the j.ws. Both of these professed bibles used by these people, are a paraphrase of scripture, written to embrace, and justify, the actions and beliefs practised within these cults.

The bible mentions a time approaching "when they will not endure sound doctrine, but after their own lust's shall they heap to themselves teachers having itching ears, and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables" 2Tim 4: 3 - 4

A good argument could be prepared to show we have reached such a point today.

Be aware!

When I first started reading my bible I read NIV and learned quite a bit, however as time goes by I am finding that comparing different versions is really the way I learn the most. I think the trick is to find a version that you are really comfortable with to read thru the bible, but when a verse comes up that interests you-- have fun doing research in the Amplified, KJV, etc.
