How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD of Heaven's Armies. I long, yes, I faint with longing to enter the courts of the LORD. With my whole being, body and soul, I will shout joyfully to the living God. Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow builds her nest and raises her young at a place near your altar, O LORD of Heaven's Armies, my King and my God! What joy for those who can live in your house, always singing your praises. Psalm 84:1-4 NLT

Psalm 84, by some unnamed descendants of Korah, celebrates the physical place of worship. God’s house, the courts, and the altar where He was honored and praised brought joy and longing to the psalm writers’ hearts. They even envied the little birds that could build their nests in the nooks and crannies of the temple.

For Christians today, Psalm 84 doesn’t really point us to our church buildings. Since the day of Pentecost recorded in Acts 2, followers of Jesus are actually God’s temple. As the apostle Paul wrote, “Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16).

What could be a greater cause for joy? The God of the entire universe has chosen to make His home in you. That’s a perfect reason to always sing His praises.

Prayer: Lord God, You are awesome. Thank You for living in me.
