SIN HAS BEEN OUTLAWED #344 - May 27, 2007

Sin has been outlawed. That's right. Sin has been outlawed. The only real sin anyone can commit today is telling someone they have sinned. On the other hand, some say there are certain types of behavior, which are putting a tremendous strain on our health care system. They want to tax the industries, which promote such behaviors. In this case, it is politically correct to speak about `sin taxes'.

Outside of such political correctness, we avoid defining sin. We even avoid specific definitions of sin in the church. I've heard preachers define sin as misuse of our free will. Does that mean I'm going to hell for choosing to be a doctor rather than a politician?

Let's get serious. The Bible defines sin concretely. For example, 1 John 3:4 says, "Sin is the transgression of the law." Now there is a straightforward definition. If you break God's law, you sin. If you take God's name in vain, if you tell a lie, if you borrow something and do not return it, if you "play around" and do not take your marriage vows seriously, if you are jealous because your neighbor has a new car and you don't, you sin.

Let's be candid and call sin exactly what it is. This is terribly important. It could be one of the reasons our society is floundering.
