A small hand reached out of the discarded blanket.
The little one born alive grasped the edge of life.
Needing love and care, the babe cried out. Its lungs underdeveloped and weak.
A nurse, defying protocol, embraced the bundle. She carried the babe away.
Tears cascaded down her face as she held the newborn close.
"I'm sorry for the pain, little one. Forgive me for the silence."
The babe cooed and looked at its rescuer.
The nurse whispered, "A pink blanket for a girl. Your name is Joy."
Unlocking her car, the nurse hid the infant in the backseat. She mentally listed all the items she would need to buy.
"My little angel has saved me."
The nurse pulled her car away from the building, never to return.
"Let's go home, Joy."
