Should Christians Judge?

Occasionally, we receive correspondence from individuals (moral relativists) standing in "judgment" over our liberty "in Christ" and our obligation to exercise judgment and discernment. Curiously, these folks fail to see the hypocrisy of their position--that of engaging in the very behavior which they claim is unacceptable. Typically, they quote Matthew 7:1 "Judge not, that ye be not judged" out of context, with hopes of intimidating those who would seek to discern truth from error. Consider the following thoughts written by Miles J. Stanford.
<HR>
The terms "judge," or "judgment," are used in different ways in the Word of God; their meanings and usage are mainly governed by the context in which they are found.

When they mean to condemn, to sentence, or to punish, man [individually] is to leave that prerogative with God. "Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord" (Romans 12:19). [God has established government--civil authority--as His earthly delegated representative/agent to administer justice upon evildoers. See Romans 13:1-7.

At other times the words mean to distinguish, to decide, to determine, to conclude, to try, to think, and to call into question. This is what God would have believers do in love, especially as to whether or not preaching and teaching is true or false to His Word. Paul wrote, "And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; that ye may approve things that are excellent" (Philippians 1:9,10).

The Lord Jesus both warns and commands to "Beware of false prophets" (Matthew 7:15). We could not "beware," or know a false prophet unless we exercised true judgment. For that we are given the correct standard: "To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them" (Isaiah 8:20).

There are realms in which the believer is generally not to judge. In most instances he is not to judge whether or not a person is saved, if he professes to be scripturally* born again. "The Lord knoweth them that are his" (2 Timothy 2:19).

Nor are we to judge another's motives. Only God can see into the heart and know the motives that underlie actions. (1 Corinthians 4:1-5) [However, Scripture does allow for some exceptions--e.g. Philippians 1:15-18].

And we are not to judge believers concerning the eating of certain kinds of foods or drink, or keeping certain days, etc. (Romans 14; 1 Corinthians 10:23-33; and Colossians 2:16,17)

All too many believers remain immature or are actually drawn into error because they seek to exercise love apart from Scripture-guided discernment and judgment. Christians who are mature, of "full age," are "those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil" (Hebrews 5:14).

One of the reasons for the Church being in such a sickly condition today is that believers have not obeyed the commands of God's Word to judge error. "Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned, and avoid them" (Romans 16:17). The false teachers make the "divisions," and not those who protest against their errors.

An often misapplied Scripture is "Judge not" (Matthew 7:1). This is a command against hypocritical judgment, and is not directed to those who in love and sincerity discern whether a teacher or teaching is true or false to the Word. "Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considereth not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye. Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye" (Matthew 7:1-5).

Actually, the last statement of this Scripture commands sincere judgment: "then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye." We are not to forget nor seek to avoid the fact that our Lord Jesus commanded us to "judge righteous judgment." He commended one, "Thou hast rightly judged." He asked others, "Why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?" (John 7:24; Luke 7:43; 12:57). Paul wrote, "I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say." Again, "He that is spiritual judgeth all things" (1 Corinthians 10:15; 2:15).
It is all too common and easy for Christians to assume a critical and censorious attitude toward those who do not share their opinions about matters other than those which have to do with Bible doctrine and moral practice. But it is our privilege and duty to do all we can to encourage their spiritual growth. We are to love and pray for one another, and to consider ourselves lest we be tempted. The safest and most profitable thing to do is to judge ourselves. "For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. But when we are judged, we are chastened (child trained) of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world" (1 Corinthians 11:31,32).

It will make all the difference if we judge our own faults as uncharitably as we do the faults of others; and judge the failings of others as charitably as we do our own!
* Mr. Stanford's statement was written several decades ago, when the profession to be "scripturally born again" was largely if not exclusively used in fundamentalist circles. Accordingly, the exercise of discernment was conditioned upon a "scriptural" profession. Miles never intended to convey the idea that we can never tell who are true and false Christians. Today, the term "born again" has been prostituted and carries numerous meanings. Believers have both the right and the obligation to judge when the term is abused or the context is not scriptural. I agree we cannot judge anothers salvation nor can we judge their motives.

There are times we must judge another persons words or actions.

We are not to stand in judgememt in the place of God/Jesus as they are the only ones qualified to judge.

AC 17:10 As soon as it was night, the brothers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue. 11 Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. 12 Many of the Jews believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.

The Bereans judged Pauls words to make sure they aligned with the Lord's scriptures.

1CO 4:18 Some of you have become arrogant, as if I were not coming to you. 19 But I will come to you very soon, if the Lord is willing, and then I will find out not only how these arrogant people are talking, but what power they have. 20 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power. 21 What do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a whip, or in love and with a gentle spirit?

1CO 5:1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that does not occur even among pagans: A man has his father's wife. 2 And you are proud! Shouldn't you rather have been filled with grief and have put out of your fellowship the man who did this? 3 Even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit. And I have already passed judgment on the one who did this, just as if I were present. 4 When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, 5 hand this man over to Satan, so that the sinful nature may be destroyed and his spirit saved on the day of the Lord.

1CO 5:6 Your boasting is not good. Don't you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough? 7 Get rid of the old yeast that you may be a new batch without yeast--as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 8 Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with bread without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth.

1CO 5:9 I have written you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people-- 10 not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11 But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.

Paul clearly has judged this man's actions as immoral and not fit to be amongst Believers. Paul also instructs Believers to not associate with those who call themselves Christians and are openly living in sexual immorality. This means the Saved Believer has to make a judgement of their fellow Believers way of living.

Some Judgement is correct and required for Believers to not be led astray.

Discernment.

This is an interesting passage that ties in with your thread JamesG.

1 Corinthians 6 (NKJV)

1 Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unrighteous, and not before the saints? 2 Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world will be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters? 3 Do you not know that we shall judge angels?

When Jesus said: "Do not judge so that you will not be judged!" (Matthew 7:1, NASB) It seams to me Jesus was actually saying, "stop being judgmental," which seams to fit what the rest of the scriptures say about this matter.

The Pharisees were very judgmental, and influences the Jewish community to do the say, it was a way of showing how religious they were, by looking down their noses at others. This is what Jesus was condemning and telling his followers not to do it! Not the practical judgment that should be metered out to wrongdoing in the congregation and bad association. In Romans 16:17, as has been clearly explained, it is wise to render a judgment against people who can have a negative effect on your spirituality, by simply scripturally marking them and avoiding close association. But that does not mean being rude or completely ignoring them, Paul is talking about spending personal time associating with them. In fact such ones need to be given positive encouragement to conform their life to scriptural standards, not our own standards.

Following Gods example. A marvelous ability God has is that he can see in individuals what they have the potential to be and to focus on the good in a person. God described David as; "My servant David, who kept My commandments and who followed Me with all his heart, to do only that which was right in My sight." (1 Kings 14:8, NASB) Of course, we know that David did some things that were wrong! Still, God chose to focus on the good because he knew that overall David's heart was upright in God's sight. Just because a person makes mistakes does not mean they have to be branded with that mistake. If a person changes, the judgment to avoid close association with them should be dropped! In imitation of God and his loving nature.

The passage below comes readily to mind after reading the above thread;

"Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand "Romans 14:4

It is so easy to be swayed into judging others ( consciously or unconsciously), and our loving heavenly father knows this only too well, hence the many passages in the Bible that warns against being a judge (that's God's own remit!!!).

For God didn't send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him John 3:17

I suppose that is part of the reason the Bible admonishes us to daily renew our minds!

"One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind...Romans 14:5"

Shalom!!!

Being given charge of things would qualify us to judge actions of those "PUT" under us. To judge someone for sins or mistakes would be wrong as we are saying we fully understand the light God has given them. It is fully possible to do wrong, and have favor with God, because of the light they have.

You can also do everything right, and not have right standing with God, I can give two different examples of this in the Word.

Best never to judge anyone according to the acts of the flesh.

Jesus Is Lord.

When you judge someone's actions you decide if they are sinning or not. If they are breaking the Law or not. You are not judging a persons salvation.

When you catch someone stealing from someone else do you not judge that as stealing. I have a Christian friend who thinks nothing of walking out of a shop without paying for an item they have tucked away in their garments. They have done this on occassion with me and another few Christian friends. We have told him to stop it. He doesn't see it as stealing. I never go to the shops with this person. Myself and others have had to watch him around at Church as people are really trusting leaving their bags unattended. We have seen him opening up bags that are not his.

So do we just ignore him after all who are we to point out another person's sin? Well we did the mature thing of going to the elders and minister and let them know our concerns. There was an annoucement made for people to not leave their bags etc.. unattended.

Unfortunately this person who could not see stealing as a sin could not be stopped he ended up stealing from the Church Office and caught in the act several times. We let him go the first few times with a warning. In the end he never changed his ways and was banned from our Church.

Not fair you hypocrites! you may well say?

We have tried to help this bloke. Is he a Saved Believer? I'm not sure and I do not judge his salvation. However the guy is a thief. That is what his actions prove and he is a thief that doesn't want to change his ways.

The Bible allows us to judge a persons actions not just to protect others from them but to spot someone's sina nd challenge them in a loving manner in the hope they will change. However when they refuse to do so you have to take more disciplinary action.

Now I did not just label this guy a thief but based on evidence before my own eyes not just once a number of times seeing him pick up things putting it in his pocket and walking out of the local shops without paying for the item. They guy has verbally admitted in doing it lots of times to me. I didn't just think to myself boy that guy looks shifty. Not only that I was not the only one there were a number of us who have seen and heard the same thing. A few witnesses. We didn't handle him at Church we put it in the hands of the Elders & Minister.

We also have a fellow that has been squeezing the buttocks of the young women at Church. And cornered a few teenage girls and touched their breasts. So those girls should not have judged that man's actions? Are you NUTS! Without judgement you will give yourself over to someone who has evil and sinful motives. We need to discern. Is this guy Saved? Again I don't know he could be. Not everybody who has inappropriate sinful behaviours is necessarily unable to repent and receive God's Salvation. This guy was banned from coming to Church after he would not stop it.

These young women and girls were not in authority over this man but they HAD THE RIGHT TO MAKE A JUDGEMENT on this blokes actions.

Again the problem is not the sin itself but the fact both men didn't STOP and didn't want to stop.

It is not as simple as to say only those in Authority can Judge.

We all have the right to judge another person's actions. If we feel their sinful actions are detrimental to us it is fine to stop having fellowship with them.

I'm not talking about malicous accusations here but TRUE observed sin.

If a person is constantly swearing should I not judge they have a foul mouth? I am making a judgement of the person's actions. If they are constantly repeating a sin action I should be concerned. I am not saying we should then go about gossipying about it to others am I.

I am only saying we have the right to recognise Sin when we see it. I am not advocating we then do something ungodly with that knowledge.

So next time you see a Christian you know Brother Mike bashing the daylights out of someone I'm sure you will not judge them as having an anger problem. You will walk on by and say to yourself it has nothing to do with me. How godly of you to not judge another person in the flesh. I am sure the victim with think how wonderful a Christian you are.

You will probably go up to their victim and tell them you forgot to Turn the Other Cheek!

Yes I judge the actions of other people. I also judge when someone is good and godly. I can't judge people's hearts (because I am not God) only their actions.

Jesus gives this advice about being able to recognise False teachers and preachers and to do this you must Judge their Actions.

MT 7:15 "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

You are welcome to not judge anybody. Feel free to be naive and just trust everything any person who claims to be a teacher or preacher or prophet.

Personally I chose to judge the actions and words of people who I come across that call themselves Christians. I don't like to be lead astray or into sin.
