Seeking Wise Counsel

Then Manoah prayed to the LORD, and said, "O my Lord, please let the Man of God whom You sent come to us again and teach us what we shall do for the child who will be born." Judges 13:8 NKJV

Many men have a tough time breaking down and admitting they don’t have the knowledge or the wisdom they need to handle certain situations. Most of us would rather cling to that of-so-Western ideal of rugged individualism than to humbly ask for help.

King Solomon offers this bit of wisdom in the book of Proverbs: “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed” (15:22 NIV). Being king of Israel during its zenith of wealth, power, and influence, Solomon had personally experienced the benefits of wise counsel. It’s hard to imagine one man, even one as wise as Solomon, accomplishing what he did without a high-quality team of advisers.

Fast-forward to the year 2020. Life today is complicated, and it’s often difficult to know which of the many decisions you can make is best. Each man needs wise, godly counsel.

So use your own learning and wisdom when that’s enough to make a good decision. Also have the humility and wisdom to know when to reach out for godly counsel.

Prayer: Father God, keep me humble enough to know when it’s wise to move forward on my own and when I should seek out godly counsel.

I know of many of Christians down through years that thought they were receiving good counseling from Godly women and men in the church. These Godly people cause them so much harm and death. So how can a unlearn person know the difference between a Godly man or woman, if there is such a thing. Not arguing, but stating a known fact. Will not a true Christian call upon God in Jesus name and Jesus himself will help that person? Or do Christians need a person to guide them in their affairs?
