For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. Romans 1:19-20 ESV

To display the invisible Creator, creation by definition must be awesome and overwhelming. God made the universe in such a way as to hold men accountable to “see” at least two of His characteristics. First, His “eternal power,” meaning that He is not bound by time, and therefore His strength remains undiminished forever; and second, He is divine, not part of the created order as we are and not subject to its limitations.

Paul’s assertion of man’s accountability agrees with the psalmist’s declaration: “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard” (Psalm 19:1-3).

God is declared through all of creation—including man himself, since He made us in His image. But He is only fully revealed in Christ, in whom “all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form” (Colossians 2:9).

Prayer: Father, thank You for displaying Your glory in Your creation and more perfectly in Your Son!
