"If one of your fellow Israelites falls into poverty and is forced to sell himself to you, do not treat him as a slave. Treat him instead as a hired worker or as a temporary resident who lives with you, and he will serve you only until the Year of Jubilee. Leviticus 25:39-40 NLT

The Sabbath is a weekly day of rest for God’s people. The Sabbath Year—celebrated every seventh year—is a year of rest for God’s land. The Year of Jubilee is a special Sabbath Year, celebrated every fifty years, and is beneficial to both God’s people and His land.

The Year of Jubilee was a kind of economic and agricultural reset button. Land sold by one generation reverted back to the original owner’s family. People who had indentured themselves to others were set free.

In the agrarian society of the Old Testament, the Year of Jubilee prevented individuals from amassing large estates and made it possible for poor families to have the means to try again. It reminded people that God is the One who owns all things. All land, wealth, and physical bodies are temporary, but He endures forever.

Today is Ash Wednesday, the day believers begin counting down to Easter, when Jesus’ sacrifice and resurrection gave believers a second chance in God’s eyes. Like the Year of Jubilee, Ash Wednesday is a reminder of God’s permanence and His love of second chances.

Prayer: Father God, thank You for giving second chances.
