Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who were interpreting for the people said to them, "Don't mourn or weep on such a day as this! For today is a sacred day before the LORD your God." For the people had all been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law. And Nehemiah continued, "Go and celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks, and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. This is a sacred day before our Lord. Don't be dejected and sad, for the joy of the LORD is your strength!" Nehemiah 8:9-10 NLT

The rebuilding of Jerusalem had begun with the temple and finished with the fortifications. It was a long and dangerous project, which culminated in a massive celebration. As the Law was read, many of the people wept—perhaps from conviction or perhaps for the same reasons as when the temple was started: “But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers’ houses, old men who had seen the first house, wept with a loud voice when they saw the foundation of this house being laid” (Ezra 312).

While there’s a time for tears, Nehemiah reminded the people that the day God fulfills His Word is a sacred day, one to remember and rejoice. Let go of the past and be strong in His joy today.

Prayer: I rejoice from my heart in God my Savior! Your joy will carry me this day!
