Jeremiah 35:12-19 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)
12Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: 13“This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Go and tell the men of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem: ‘Will you not accept discipline and obey My words?’ declares the LORD.
14The words of Jonadab son of Rechab have been carried out. He commanded his sons not to drink wine, and they have not drunk it to this very day because they have obeyed the command of their forefather. But I have spoken to you again and again, and you have not obeyed Me!
15Again and again I have sent you all My servants the prophets, proclaiming: ‘Turn now, each of you, from your wicked ways, and correct your actions. Do not go after other gods to serve them. Live in the land that I have given to you and your fathers.’ But you have not inclined your ear or listened to Me. 16Yes, the sons of Jonadab son of Rechab carried out the command their forefather gave them, but these people have not listened to Me.
17Therefore this is what the LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I will bring to Judah and to all the residents of Jerusalem all the disaster I have pronounced against them, because I have spoken to them but they have not obeyed, and I have called to them but they have not answered.’”
18Then Jeremiah said to the house of the Rechabites: “This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Because you have obeyed the command of your forefather Jonadab and have kept all his commandments and have done all that he charged you to do, 19this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Jonadab son of Rechab will never fail to have a man to stand before Me.’”
A Command to Obey
Whether under the Old Covenant or the New Covenant, we are commanded of God, as those who profess faith in God – Father, Son Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit – to obey God and His commands to us. Since we are now under the New Covenant, we do NOT have to obey the Old Covenant liturgical, ceremonial, sacrificial, purification, circumcision, dietary and Sabbath laws. But we do have to obey God’s commands to us under the New Covenant, which are written down for us in the books of the New Testament.
But sadly many pastors of institutional “churches” are teaching that we do not have to obey God and His commandments and that we do not have to repent of (die to) our sins. But that is a lie from hell. For all throughout the New Testament writings we are instructed that we must die to sin and obey our Lord’s commands or we do not know God, we are not in fellowship with Him, and we do not have salvation from sin nor eternal life in Him. So we need to listen to what is taught to us in the New Testament about obedience.
Turn From Wicked Ways
When we come to genuine biblical faith in Jesus Christ we are now to die with Christ to sin and now live to Him and to His righteousness in walks of obedience to our Lord and to His commands, as empowered by God. And it was the same for those under the Old Covenant. As followers of Christ we are to turn from our wicked ways, and correct our actions, and no longer go after the gods (idols) of this world to serve them. Sin must no longer be what we practice, but obedience to God is to be what we live by.
Yet so many people who give lip service to the Lord, and who profess Jesus as their Lord and Savior, do not accept the discipline of the Lord in their lives, and they do not obey His commands. Even though God has spoken to them through His messengers, time and time again, still they have not obeyed, but they continue in their deliberate and habitual sins against God. They do not incline their ears to the words of the Lord but they chart their own course, instead, and they follow in the ways of their sinful natures.
Judgment to Come
There are some people who may face the immediate judgment of God, depending upon the severity of their sinful actions. Or, as they continue in their sinful ways, and in their refusal to obey the commands of God, they may face God’s judgments against them. Others who profess faith in Jesus Christ but who are still living to please the flesh may appear to not have any judgments against them presently, but one day they will stand before the Lord, and they will be judged by God because they would not obey Him.
Those who have died with Christ to sin, and who have obeyed Him in life practice, and who have kept His words to the very end, all in the power of God, by God-gifted faith in the Lord Jesus, they have the hope of salvation from sin and eternal life with God. But all who continue in their sinful practices, who do not turn from their sins, and who do not obey our Lord’s commands, they will not inherit eternal life with God, even though they have been convinced by liars that they will spend eternity with God. Know this!
[Matthew 7:13-14,21-23; Luke 9:23-26; John 10:27-30; Acts 26:18; Romans 1:18-32; Romans 2:5-10; Romans 3:23; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-14; Romans 12:1-2; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10,19-20; 1 Corinthians 10:1-22; 2 Corinthians 5:10,15,21; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:17-32; Ephesians 5:3-6; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 3:1-19; Hebrews 4:1-13; Hebrews 10:19-39; Hebrews 12:1-2; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 John 1:1-10; 1 John 2:1-6; 1 John 3:4-10; Revelation 2:1-29; Revelation 3:1-22]
So, if you have been holding on to your sin, and if obedience to God is not your practice, I pray you will turn from your sin and obey God from now on.

Trust and Obey
Words by John H. Sammis, 1887
Music by Daniel B. Towner, 1887
When we walk with the Lord
in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will,
He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.
Not a shadow can rise,
not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear,
not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.
Not a burden we bear,
not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss,
not a frown or a cross,
But is blessed if we trust and obey.
But we never can prove
the delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows,
for the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.
Then in fellowship sweet
We will sit at His feet.
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way.
What He says we will do,
Where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
