There is a heap of theology here
This is one of those places in scripture that has several meanings (they don't disagree with each other, there's just a lot there)

To me this means, Jesus was, is, and will be forever. He is the Word, Jesus/the Word are what save us. This isn't temporary thing, this isn't a temporary promise, God's Word stands forever. Jesus' salvation stands forever.

Joh 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.
Joh 1:11 He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him.
Joh 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,
Joh 1:13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
Joh 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Joh 1:15 John *testified about Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.'"

Even though Jesus created the World, the world (people in the world) did not know him. It's the same today. People don't know who their creator is. Oh, they may have heard about God or Jesus at some point in their life, but they think it's a myth or fairy tale. These verses could be used as an argument for predestination, but either way, those who accept Jesus are saved. (receive and believe).

It's interesting here, that even though John the Baptist was physically older than Jesus, John said "He existed before me". John knew who Jesus was.

Joh 1:29 The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him and *said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! ( Matt 3:11, Mark 1:7 )

1 Cor 1:19 For it is written, "I WILL DESTROY THE WISDOM OF THE WISE, AND THE CLEVERNESS OF THE CLEVER I WILL SET ASIDE."
1 Cor 1:20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

God often chooses to do things in ways that don't make sense to us.

A baby? Born in a manger? Really? This is the salvation of the world? A carpenter's son from Galilee? You've got to be kidding me. He's going to die on a cross? Why would he do that?

People were looking for a victorious warrior king, to conquer the Romans and restore Israel. Not someone who preached forgiveness and hung around with tax collectors, prostitutes and fishermen. They were looking at the material temporal world, not the everlasting spiritual world. Yet in the end, God's way makes more sense.
Even today, the Gospel doesn't make sense to many people. What kind of God is this? Who would send his son to earth to die for us?

I love the book of James, is there any other book that gives so many practical examples of how a Christian should live?

Jas 1:12 Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.
Jas 1:13 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.
Jas 1:14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.
Jas 1:15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.
Jas 1:16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.
Jas 1:17 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.
Jas 1:18 In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures.
Jas 1:19 This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger;
Jas 1:20 for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God.
Jas 1:21 Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.

Jas 1:23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror;

These verses are mostly talking about living as a Christian.
verse 18 (the one you picked out) is specifically stating that God had a plan, it was his will that at that time he would people about in the world, people who are different, slow to anger, people who had the power to resist sin, preach the Gospel and make a difference. These were the first Christians, and boy did they ever shake up the world
