To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. Matthew 25:15 NIV

Throughout the wisdom literature of the Old Testament, especially in Psalms and Proverbs, “gold” refers to the tremendous value of God’s words and wisdom, and His commands and instructions.

Today’s New Testament scripture reading is the fourth time Jesus talks about “gold” during His public ministry. This final time is shortly before His arrest, flogging, and crucifixion. So Jesus uses “gold” to communicate something very important about God’s kingdom.

In His parable, Jesus speaks about three men of differing abilities. Two of the men wisely used the bags of gold entrusted to them. In turn, their master rewarded both men the same way. The third man hid his bag of gold out of fear, had nothing to show after such a long time, and therefore faced his master’s worst possible judgment against him.

God is not impressed when you give your resources back to Him, for they are His anyway. Even the third man knew that (Matthew 25:26).

Instead, God wants you to use your resources—your heart and soul, your time and attention, your abilities and talents, your resources and wealth—for His glory.

Prayer: Lord, transform me. Help me to be usable. All I am and have is nothing without You.
